My first Pittsburgh Kilt is corduroy. It's tough, it's warm, and it washes well. The only disadvantage I can think of is that it has a good memory -- that is, if you sit down, the kilt will stay sitting when you stand up; potentially embarassing if you're not wearing a sporran. This aspect goes away with time and wear.
