I've got one of those "seasonal beards" as well - short goatee in the summer, full beard in the winter. For some reason, most of my kilted friends have beards, too. Thanks for posting that amusing website.

I have a godson who is a priest also. I regularly see his beard grow and then shorn. When I finally asked him about it, out of curiousity (he's not given to indecision), he told me his wife looked at him one day, y'know that look, and said,

"if you lose the beard, I'll make it worth your while."

Needless to say, those are the fastest shaves in world history. He regularly loses it now. Ah, a happy marriage!

If my wife were to say something like that, I'm sure the results would be something like that!

I have had some sort of facial hair since I graduated high school in 1967. For the first 4-5 years a large handlebar moustache, then I decided to let the whole face grow. Off and on (mostly on) since then. I personally would let mine grow until it stopped, but my wife starts to make comments when it gets more than 5-6 inches long. I usually push it as far as I can, Then I break down and trim it back to about 2-3 inches. My bare face is not a pleasant sight.

Interestingly, an elderly lady left her group of friends and approached me one day while I was out walking with my wife, and asked why I had one. Then she stated the same "something to hide" thing.

When I explained that I was an Orthodox priest, and that we are canonically required to grow one, she continued pestering me about it, until we wished her a good day and left.

Funny, I would have asked her if she was a Christian. If she said she was, I would have asked her what Jesus had to hide... has she even seen a portrayal of the Lord without a beard? Does she have any doubt that he didn't wear a beard? So, since God has a beard, who is she to question your motives?

All I have to say is that I'm envious. I've tried mightily several times in my adult life to grow a beard and all to no avail. I have been cursed with poor distribution of facial hair.

I can grow a short moustache, which I have, but I'm often asked why it does not extend to the corners of my mouth. The answer is simple, on my right side, just where the moustache ends, there is a patch of skin that is completely hairless but there's no such patch on my left. So the only way to keep my moustache balanced is to shave the left to match the natural length of the right.

As for a beard, well, I have more patches of hairless skin on my chin as well. And once again they are nowhere near symmetrical. The last time I tried to grow a beard it looked like I had some sort of skin disease. Uneven patches of hair interspersed randomly in a sea of skin. It was not a pretty sight. :-?

And sadly, I've always wanted a beard, a giant beard, but that will never be. My hats off to all of you who can be bearded. When you pass on, consider leaving it to me in your will! ;)

That's a good point Mark, for a Christian. It's a shame that more christians don't consider this also.
The Creator caused hair to grow on mens' faces and not womens. I believe this was to distinguish the sexes in the same way He has done with all creation, whether birds, animals etc. God's people, Israel, always wore beards.
I see not reason to change the order of things.

I grew a full beard when I was able nearly 40 years ago, it's never come off and I'll be buried with it (and in my kilt!)

I'm 21 now, and feel like I can finally grow some amount of facial hair, that doesn't look stupid. I still can't do a full beard, or sideburns even, so all I have that's worth keeping is a goatee. I enjoy it though.

I have had a moustache for about fourty years - much as it is now, apart from at some point in the '60/'70s when the droopy, Mexican style was popular. I also experimented, way back in history, with a goatee which I kept for about a year - I had much thinner features then and I believed it suited me, but no-one that I can remember agreed with me and so, eventually, it came off. A few years ago, after I retired, I tried to grow my hair (what little I have) but got sick and tired of its daily maintenance and had it cut back to my normal style. There are some photos in my Photo Album that were taken at that time! Again, family and friends were constantly telling me how awful it looked!

Last year, I tried a beard again, but after some six months or so, shaved it off because I absolutely hated it - both in appearance and the feeling of it.

No, it'll be the clean-shaven look for me for the remainder of my days. Beards, long hair, oh and hats, just do not suit me!!
