Kiltstore or Scottishkilts

I don't want to hijack another thread, so I will move this here. I know it has been discussed previously, but I wondered if anyone could give a bit of a review of the kilts they have ordered from either Kiltstore.net or Scottishkilts.net . I am not looking for a review of the kilt pin or jacket that may have been ordered (guilty myself) but rather just the kilts that people have purchased from either supplier. Pictures would also be great.

Also, anyone have a kilt in the Isle of Skye tartan?

Colin, I've not bought a kilt from either, but I have bought a jacket, pins, hose etc from Scottishkilts.
I've found their service is excellent, I would highly recommend them.

Thanks Graham, I too have purchased a jacket from them and found their service to be great. Davaid is supposedly sending me a few swatches for a couple of kilts (wedding party). However I am just curious about the kilts this time around. The service may be great, but what are the kilts like. The prices at the Kiltstore have been revamped and are now better (for kilts) than Scottishkilts. I am wondering if it is worth saving the few bucks (not that a dress sporran couldn't take the place of the extra funds saved) or go with the service level I know and like?

I bought an 8 yd. trad. from Kiltstore.net, which I am very happy with. Their kilts are made by Balmoral. Here is my review which they've posted on their website:

The only thing I didn't like was the $58.00 US Customs fee...!

Hey Colin, I was going to start a new thread too, but you beat me to it.

I've just received the 8yd "Balmoral" from Balmoral Kilts via kiltstore.net. I concur that the service was very good. I told them that I had a short deadline of today, Nov 28th (gave myself 4 days breathing space from my real deadline of Friday). So that was 38 days after I ordered. They said they'd make it, and the kilt actually arrived 35 days after I ordered it. Not too shabby!

The big problem was that there was $95 CAD in duties and taxes on the whole shebang was another $90 or so. With FedEx fees it was and additional $192. You'll save this by sending it to the States and picking it up. Note, you'll also save $50 in shipping if you don't mind waiting for another 2 weeks for standard mail.

The quality seems very good, but I do have a question about it. I'm hoping that I'm just doing something wrong, but the first pleat (to my left of the apron) seems to 'kick' or 'fly up' a bit when I move. It get's pulled to my right a bit.

I first heard of this problem years ago when I was in SF and dropped into a Kilt store near Fisherman's Wharf (I forget the name). In thier advertising they said that the first pleat 'kicking' was a common problem, and that they tailored their kilts better to the seat which prevented this (which was part of the justification for the $750 USD kilt!).

So, has anybody else noticed this problem? Am I wearing it wrong? It seems to fit well around the waist and seat, but I notice it after I've moved around a bit.

Most kilts have that pleat that kicks up.

I haven't noticed a problem with mine, but maybe I'm just missing something. What does "kicking" mean when referring to that first pleat?

I have purchased two kilts from Scottishkilts.net. One is a 16-oz worsted wool 8-yard hand sewn traditional kilt in Scots American tartan. It's truly amazing and fits perfectly. The second is a 13-oz worsted wool 8-yard machine stitched kilt in Scottish National tartan that's also extremely nice. Actually, in some ways, I like it better and it was $200 less. I've always received great customer service from them and their shipping times have better than quoted. I don't think you can go wrong with them.

I had three kilts from KiltStore last year (a 7yd Muted Brown woollen twill, a 7yd dark blue denim and an 8yd Green Camouflage) and am very satisfied indeed with all three. Of course, these are not traditional kilts, but the attention to detail and the workmanship is very good. I forget now what the delivery times were, but their Customer Services section was very efficient. When in Edinburgh last year, I was invited to lunch with Adele and Nick who run KiltStore et al and found them to be utterly charming and undoubtedly sincere in their business endeavours.
