Kilts and fundraisers
Leaving class today I noticed that there was a small fundraising bake sale going on in Jamrich Hall. I didn't know what it was for, I tried to catch the sign on my way down the stairs, and as I was passing one of the workers said she liked the kilt (I was wearing my green PK today.) They asked about the cold, I told them it was quite warm, and I bought some goodies (it was for a local animal shelter.)
This afternoon while waiting for the prof for another class to show up, one of the guys in the class walks up in a kilt. We're in another class together, he had been wearing trousers, but he was giving a presentation on the development of Scottish national identity (Senior history seminar class), so he wore his Blackwatch kilt.
While we were all talking, he mentioned the bake sale (still going on, he passed it on the way in). He told us that they said "The last guy who passed us in a kilt donated."

Your reputation precedes you Nick. That is a pretty neat story.

Hah! That is the number one reason to wear a kilt right now when it is not widely accepted. At work, whenever a co-worker mentions me to somebody who has not met me, they can say "Rob is responsible for ..." and when the person asks who I am, they can say "You know, the guy that wears the kilt!" I love standing out! The future will tell if it is detrimental to my career at any point, but my guess is that the globalization of the business community will make it a moot point at sometime in the not too distant future. My team has already toyed with the idea of a team tartan! No encouragement from me at all (I feel it is unfair as I am the manager), but I have offered advice and told them that I would purchase whatever tartan/kilt if they decided to follow through! My manager would be be blown away. I would pay to see his face if we all, or even someone other than me, came into the HQ building kilted! He has accepted it, but not embraced it. In fact, he has an open offer of a lunch/dinner at a place of my chosing if ANYBODY else in the office decides to wear a kilt (ostensibly because I did it, but that was not specified). Boy would I like to collect on that meal!
The kilt concealed a blaster strapped to his thigh. Lazarus Long
