I think the difference in opinion about saunas comes from where we've both grown up. You grew up in Finland where it's nice and cold, so the hot sauna seems like a great idea.

I spent much of my childhood in South Texas where it was often over 110 degrees and almost 100% humidity for much of the summer. I can remember my father carefully scrapping black dots off the car after a drive because the day was so hot that the asphalt in the roadway had melted and was being kicked up by the tires.

I used to love to go visit my mother at the medical school where she worked and stand in the giant walk-in freezers. When it's a sauna outside for most of the day, the idea of climbing in a sauna for pleasure seems downright diabolical.

Now, if it's -20 degrees F outside, I'd bet a sauna would be mighty attractive.

Yikes that forum is rife with ignorance! I do like what the former UtiliKilt employee said:
and when it comes right down to it most guys just don't have the balls to wear something they don't see 50 other guys wearing each day.

I think that such fora are NOT a good representation of the average person. Though there were some classic examples of typical male insecurity on display there. All the more reason for us here to go about our day kilted.

It was interesting that some of the responders indicated that they would like to wear a kilt if they ever became popular or fashionable. Typical of insecurity, of wanting to blend in, not wanting to draw attention to yourself as somehow being different from the norm.

I've often felt that many of the compliments we get as kilt wearers is not only because the garment is impressive, but because people recognize that we are confident in who we are. It demonstrates that we are not bound by perceived social norms.

On the other hand, the posters in that forum would probably dress in fig leaves if they became "popular."

I'll bet that those who saying that kilts were a gateway to cross dressing would be some of the first to put on a dress if it became "fashionable."

I hadn't even thought of the "Dandy", but that is so very true.

I think the title of this thread is wrong. "how other fashionable males view about kilts".

To remind you... They ain't wearing kilts! ;)

Maybe we should print T-shirts saying "Retrosexuals wear kilts" and maybe the description to the backside if we don't want to leave people wondering...

Sometimes my wife thinks I desire to shock others by wearing the kilt to different places (I am still new to wearing a kilt), but I see it as an opportunity to show them I am comfortable with who I am, and I enjoy wearing the kilt!

Maybe I jest with her a little too much, she is not against my being kilted, but it will take some more time before it is "normal" to her.

The opinions by these "fasionable" males, are most likely Gen-Xers and later that have grown up with the Fashion Industry telling them what to wear.
Most of the Baby-Boomer generation did not have the advertising influence to the same degree, we were happy to have a TV, most people today have one in almost every room.

Again, most of their comments are based on their own ignorance, or desire to be "cool", and fit in to their peers. So far I have had VERY positive feedback from teens when wearing my kilt, so we need to bring influence where we can by showing that it IS "just another piece of clothing for men".

I think that we are dealing with people whose idea of "hard news" is Entertainment Tonight.
