The only thing holding the plaid in place was the brooch and the epaulet (and of course, my hand in the photo.

Well, I have not a jacket. I assume I can put it upon the shoulder of my Scottish shirt too. Or use a normal jacket rather than a Scottish one.

Great images, GM. I especially like the left one. It is really rich and very elegant. It is really a pity that today "elegance" for men means to wear anonymous black or grey suits. The only allowed coloured accessory is a tie. Women have much more opportunities. I really think that kilts are a move towards peer opportunities between men and women in dressing too.
Our culture allows only trousers for man, assuming that anything else is good for women only. However in many cultures, skirt-like dressing is very common for men. For example, japanese kimono and arabic galabia.

Just a question about hoses: in the images you published, they looks different from the classic kilt hose you can purchase in shop. They looks like normal socks with a coloured ribbon around them. Flashes are really the extremities of the ribbon bow. Since I have no kilt hose, what if I use normal socks and two ribbons of the same base colour of my kilt?

Have a look here. http://www.geocities.com/alanhsails/...lt_jacket.html
This is a good how-to on modifying a a regular jacket.

Of kilt hose and bows.
On the kilt hose, any slightly longer than knee high wool socks with a color to match and/or complement your kilt will do. The "slightly longer than knee length" is so a small edge can be turned down to hide the tops of the flashes. You are quite right originally the flashes were the tips of a ribbon used to keep the hose up in the days before spandex. You could just use a bit of ribbon and cut off the excess so that about 5 CM shows out the bottom. To find good wool socks, try an Alpini (outdoor) shop.
On the jacket I bought a used jacket and had a tailor cut it off at waist level and do a 45 degree cut on the front two corners. It looks good and cost little. See the above post.

In the pictures the men are wearing custom woven kilt hose in tartan. You can still get them but they are special orders and are horribly expensive.
Also, it has become the norm to fold over the tops of socks to hide the ribbon and hence the modern flashes that are simply bits of ribbon or tartan attached to a garter.
You can get very inexpensive kilt hose and flashes from www.SportKilt.com that are servicable enough. Of course you can also make your own with two strips of ribbon that coordinate with the kilt and some elastic.

Theoretically you can wear any jacket with a kilt. The problem with most blazers & suit coats is that they are so long that they hide much of the kilt. Also, the way they are cut in the front hids the sporran. So you should follow that link for instructions on having your regular jacket shortened & having the front edge cut away to reveal the sporran. If you or a family member is good at sewing it shouldn't be too difficult.
