Is there an Iranian tartan...

Got an Iranian friend, well actually an American who immigrated from Iran, who might be buying a kilt, I was just wondering if there was one out there.

Not to my knowledge... the closest tartan in the Middle East would be the one for the Sultanate of Oman's Armed Forces Pipe Band.

I highly doubt there would be- Iran is a mostly Muslim country and while I believe unbifurcation is not against Islamic law per se, it is certainly not common.

A quick search on Kiltstore and Google brings up none.

I'll take a look at some of the books tonight and see if we can't find a Scot who made his way to Persia (Iran) -- many countries with famous Scots expats will "adopt" their tartans; for instance, there was a Leslie who served in the Austro-Hungarian Army, so some Austrians wear the Leslie Tartan. The Russians were the Gordon in honour of Scottish soldier-of-fortune Patrick Gordon, who served with the Tsarist forces, etc.

What state does he live in now? He could always wear the tartan of that state, if there is one. He could also wear one of the American tartans, such as the US St. Andrews tartan.

I was thinking, maybe if he found a tilework-type patterned fabric it would look similar to a tartan but have a very Middle Eastern feel. It would have to be a repeating pattern, but the geometric shapes woud work as well as a sett to line up the pleats.

It is technically the tartan of the pipe band of the Sultante of Oman's Armed Forces, but I doubt they wear it in kilt form. The Jordanians also have a pipe band, but they do not wear kilts & tartan either.

He could certainly get one made up, but given the fact that Oman is a seperate country and ethnicity -- Arab versus Persian -- that might cause offense.
