So, with the web hosting I already have, I'm allowed an additional domain and hosting of it. Over the last few days I've been thinking I'd like to do a kilt related site. My thoughts were to do a site for beginner kilt wearers. A sort of how-to guide. I suppose along the lines of the So You Want To Wear The Kilt book.

I have only a small portion of the intro page done (a REALLY small portion), but I'd like to get some feedback on my menu bar. I'm looking for suggestions for additions or subtractions to it.

I'd basically like to compile some of the information I've learned here into one easy to navigate place.

I obviously do not claim to be an expert, but hope to at least learn more as I delve into this project. I'll probably be seeking loads of input, with credit given as needed.

I think a site aimed toward beginners is an excellant idea. Having the info needed in one place would possibly encourage more people to wear kilts.

Isn't that an Irish tartan you use for your background? Is XMarks not enough for a beginner? It was for me.

I like the idea. You have a good looking page so far. Compiling the basic essential information in a sequential fashion should be great for those just starting, give them a base to start from. Of course, you need to get Hamish to help with this.

What arrows? The boxes, I think most folks can figure that out where to go.
How about shirts, plaids, shoes, and moving hats from the belts. A note on kilt pins and brooches. Maybe order it from head to toe.

starbkjrus, has a point, this forum is a wealth of information. However, the information contained can be hard to navigate. It is the nature of online fora to be great for discussing, sharing, meeting, and conversating; but they are not so great for being knowledge-bases. If you come to XMarks looking for the answer to a specific question, you either go thru a kloodgey search, or ask a potentionally repeated question.

I like your idea, but instead of being just for beginners, make it just a general how-to-wear-kilts website. This way you have an excuse for more content. You can have a beginners section, a section for the parade marching kilt wearers, a section for the historical re-enactors, for formal wearers, casual, warm weather, cold weather, sports, et cetera.

I'd be happy to help with the project. I am a professional (barely) web-designer in my spare time and for a few side projects at work. What do you create your pages in? I am curious; the source code implies a mix of styles. I use DreamweaverMX, FlashMX, Emacs, Photoshop7, and ImageReady7.

I think you must link to Matt Newsome's pages for some good kilt history. There's too much garbage prancing around as history out there on the net, so a link to some solid history will be very helpful to new kilt wearers.

Also, if you can get some of the gents to allow you to use their photos of various good-looking ways to wear the kilt, that would make visitors happy as well.

I like the idea of a page for beginners that is organized. XMarks is a wonderful community but you have to search for things in the threads. A simple organized site would be a great adjunct.

But I do agree that the background tartan is a wee bit too bright green. How about we go for a weathered or muted version instead.

I couldn't agree more with Sherry. One of the first places I visit on a new web site is the photo Gallary. A perfect example for me, I really enjoy xmarks catagory of show us your pics. Is there a way to soften the green?

I like the idea. A how-to page, as opposed to a message board, could be very helpful to newbies.

As for the background, it would look better if you faded the graphic, as if it were a watermark. I think most photo editing programs can do that for you.
