With your big and tall friend, please caution him to stay away from some contemporary kilt styles. I have found that trying to fit a large man in a kilt worn on the hips is sometimes impossible. It's a matter of Geometry. Most kilts worn on the hips will have a drop in the neighborhood of 18.5 to 22.5 inches. This paired with a waist measurement of anything over 50 inches will cause the wearer to flash each and every time they bend. Even slightly.
Have him stay with traditional kilts that use a traditional rise of at least 2 inches.
