I traveled around a good bit of Europe, including Amsterdam, wearing mostly plain, casual kilts. The only tartan kilt I took with me was a Stewart Hunting from Bearkilts (RIP?).

The only negative comments I got were from two older women on our tour group who just couldn't (or wouldn't) grasp the concept of a man wearing anything but pants.

I loved Amsterdam, by the way. Along with London and Rome, it's one of the places I can't wait to get back to some day.

Very true, I have a Pittsburgh kilt that is actually made fro mthe same weight of material as slacks and looks so sharp! I wish i had more occasion to wear it since I don't have many opportunities to wear business attire.

    Robin,

Thanks for your interest and kind comments about my kilts.

Let me say, I have been to your lovely country. I spent most of my time at Gilze-Rijen on the airfield. But got to travel quite a bit. I found the Dutch to be among the most open and accepting people in the world.

If they can accept me with kind comments, admiring looks, and hearty welcomes I don't think you will have any problems.

Speaking as a Dutchman who wears and builds kilts, I do not think you will have any problems. My conservative family accepts the kilt without any problems what so ever

Robin, you won't regret buying a plain.
I struggled for quite a while with the same issues that you have.

Robert from RKilts gave me a push with a lovely plain green kilt and I've not looked back.
My second was a USAK PV dark green, I have a FK blue on the way and plan another plain yet.

There was a time when I believed that real kilts were tartan only. I'm glad I've found that not to be true.
