I bid on something at the last 5 seconds once, only to have two more bids beat me in the remaining time.

You have been screwed by sniping software....happens to us all.
One of my buddies is a big ebayer and his philosophy is to bid as much as you're willing to pay and leave it there....if you get beat, he figures, there'll be another one along eventually. When I've won auctions on cameras that I want, that's what I have done...helps, though, when there's more than one of what you're after in the mix at the same time: if you bid enough, you scare everyone off and they go over to the auction on one of the other ones. Seems like kilt auctions don't always follow this model, though.

Yeah, bidding x dollars, even though you're willing to pay x+1 dollars will get you every time.
My coworker is constantly bemoaning the fact that he is beat out of great deals by a dollar or two. I keep trying to tell him to bid up to what he's willing to pay (whether it's the last minute or not), and he'll never miss out on a great deal.
You'll never regret being losing an auction for higher than you wanted to pay, and you won't pay more than you would by bidding lower.
