About forty years ago I got annoyed with the third strap-just more to fiddle with: and removed it from my then only kilt.
Since then all my kilts-traditional or whatever have been made without one-and I've never felt the lack.

I have kilts with straps and without.
A couple of second-hald kilts I bought are far too big round the waist, so the straps are no use. A well-adjusted leather belt is quite sufficient.
Only once has a kilt thus worn come undone; the kilt pin caught on someone else's clothes while dancing, and the whole thing was got unwrapped!
No, I was dressed in the usual way for dancing, not regimental.

I've no problems with nr.3...it's also the only strap that's visible when you wear a belt....I like the look also.

I have kilts with both two and three buckles, and I prefer the one with two buckles. The third one just seems superfluous to me. Just my opinion, but I'm also planning on removing the third buckle on my SWK.

I prefer the look of three straps, but I don't like a belt so I may be unusual in my tastes. Really prefering the straps is one of the reasons I can't warm up to the casuals I see.
