Robin,
Those who looked at you like an alien, may have wondered why you didn't have on a coat, hat, and gloves more so than the kilt. Great that the waitresses were talking about your kilt!
I had to go to a preop session at the hospital before my recent back surgery. I wore my Stillwater Nightstalker to that. I was in a treatment room with a nurse with the curtain drawn, when another nurse came bursting in and had to know if my kilt was the Black Watch and what clan I belonged to. They had been talking about it out at the nursing station.
Oh, the power of this garment.

I had a similar experience with people's looks today. I had to go into downtown DC this afternoon for a board meeting (I'm on the board of directors for a nonprofit). Well, it was in the 40's (Fahrenheit) and I was wearing my kilt, a tweed jacket and my glengarry (other accessories of course guys). I was quite warm yet there were lots of people dressed up like they were about to embark on an expedition to the South Pole. And yet, these loonies are asking me if I'm cold. And I was actually sweating because I was too warm with all that wool on.
