    Dressing up a U.K.

A couple of weeks ago I went to visit some old friends in L.A. Once I got there, I learned he had obtained an invite for us for a place called The Magic Castle. The bad news was there was a dress code, and I hadn't packed for it.
So, I picked up a dark grey shirt, black tie and borrowed a jacket.
Here's what I was able to throw together. The kilt is more olive than it apears in the picture. Also keep in mind that if I had access to my own closet, I wouldn't pair those boots and an oversized jacket. But as a last minute "improvised" wardrobe, I thought it wasn't too bad.

    Here's our group:

Once he saw me, our ticket-holding host nervously informed me that kilts were NOT ALLOWED, and he had seen a kilt wearer turned away before.

Well, when we got there, the doorman didn't give me a second look. Either he just didn't bother to look below my tie, or (as I prefer to believe) the company got so much grief for discriminating against a kilt that they changed their policy.

I'd like to think that some unknown kilt-wearer helped blaze the way for me that night. Whoever you are, thank you!!

I think you did a great job of putting something together. I think you look as good as the guys wearing the suits. It would be interesting to find out if there had been a policy change regarding admitting men who are wearing kilts, or wether the doorman missed the kilt.

Either that he or didn't even recognize it as a kilt. He did a quick scan and saw all solid colors and just assumed that he was seeing the top of a pair of pants.

    Thumbs up

Great look. It's much easier to improvise and dress up a kilt than Levi's.

Very cool. Good thing to know about the dress code. The Magic Castle is one place I hope to go this year, as soon as I can score some tickets. Now I know I'll have to call ahead and inquire about the dress code (and maybe bring up the fact that they have already allowed some kilted brethren inside)

That is a good look. As someone has already said, you can always dress up a kilt. Or dress one down for that matter. The regular jacket probably actually helped, as it did not call attention that you were wearing something different below.

Okay, dumb question but I've never even been to that area.

    What is the Magic Castle?

I have a Hugo Boss blazer that I match up with the Olive UK mocker.

My favorite story in that is when I was working backstage at Avery Fisher Hall for a concert in shirt and tie, oliver mocker, Hugo Boss jacket, and my Doc Martens. I had to go to the front of house to talk to the house manager about getting some doors opened to allow for easier access to the backstage when performers had to move about. I got approached by this adorable older lady usher who wanted to know if I was working with them that evening and thought the kilt was "cute."

Who looks down while they are looking at the ticket stub? Great throw together attire, looking good.
