Just my personal take on this - if someone really wanted a stars and stripes kilt design I would have a blue fabric with small amounts of red and white in the weft (vertical in the finished kilt) maybe two threads of colour two of blue then two of colour at intervals of one inch, colour alternating red and white. With such a small 'sett' the kilt could then be made with alternating pleats having a red or white line either centre or I would put it close to the fold so the alternate stripe flashed easily.
I might try having the same colour stripes one every 6 inches in the warp just to make it more tartanish, but I'd need to see it first.
At the edge of the apron I would attach a vertical band with two lines of small descrete stars on blue, and a fringe of mostly blue but with red and white included.
I would have the star band made with the proper number of stars(which I believe is 50?) in two counterchanged rows and then a blank strip so that the stars could be fitted onto - say 20 inches, and the blank area would then extend the band up to maybe 26 or 28 inches, plus a hem allowance.
This is of course making the kilt more flag like, but it would not be right to have parts of stars so each kilt must have its own full set of whole stars, and that being the case only the right number of stars would be correct.

Wearing a country flag kilt is fine to me...although I'll never get one myself, because I think it's tasteless, pointless and tacky.
A flag represents a country....sitting on it is maybe not done, but hey!...we do more harm to the countries we live in...sitting on it won't make it worse I guess?
Just not my cup of tea...

Great Thread - No US Flag Kilts
Why is it that i can archive 100s of email messages and yet be unable to find the ones I need when I need them?
Last year I was looking at a foreign kiltmaker's page ( the company that makes the Scottish Flag kilts?) and saw a line "coming soon" - kilts with other country's flags.
I politely emailed the gentleman and advised him that the United States has a Flag Code and that a kilt with our nation's flag would be gravely offensive to many of us.
He responded with his thanks and said he had never heard of our code. Remember, we are one of the most strict nation's for a code of etiquette for our national symbol.
I have to disagree with CameronTaylor when he said, "He's not using a flag ... He didn't say he was going to use a flag to make a kilt now did he ? The flag code pertains to flags and flags alone. It does NOT pertain to any other representation of the stars and stripes. Any piece of fabric can be printed, embroidered, etc. with a flag on it but that does not make it a flag"
Printing one or many small flags on cloth that will be made into apparel violates the spirit of the Flag Code. Many stories exist of POWs making 'flags' out of dyes made from berries or even blood. Their small, pathetic representations of the US Flag *became* US Flags.
I have found that in 98% of the times I see someone with a Flag Code violation involving clothing - they have no idea they were doing something "wrong". Personally, I think a US Flag on a shirt or jacket, and displayed in a way that promotes patriotism, is nothing but positive. But, I dont wear them because the Flag Code says nogo. And a Flag, or image of a flag, on something you would sit on? Never.
On another note - here is a great way to easily host your pics. Just upload your image (free) and they provide you with numerous URLs for adding your photo to eBay or even in the html to just drop into an xmarks post.

I once made a Canadian Flag kilt for someone it turned out great and looked cool .It was pleated red and the aprons were white with a big red maple leaf in the middle. I made it out of a poly/cotton as it was the firt time I was making one the customer loved.
I don't there is anything wrong with using a flag as a kilt just another way to express your heritage.
I for one am pround to be a Canadian
