I'm torn as to whether or not to hem the SWK Hunting McLeod that I recently got...I'm trying to keep it at the top of the knee but that means wearing it rather high up...I'm just wearing it as it is for a while before i decide...if the Hntng McLeod gets hemmed then the Nightstalker will too. When I put the USA casual next to the Stillwaters, though, the difference doesn't seem that great and the USA hits just where I want it both at the knee and at the waist...go figger.
I would suggest that there might be a "butt factor" involved...sorry, guys, but if you think about it no matter what your height there's material taken up by the size of your butt and that will have an effect on where the bottom of the kilt falls (all things being equal). While I do have a behind, it's a relatively small one...some guys don't have a butt at all and some guys have - shall we say - butts that are more than adequate...add in the length of your thighs and the position of your waist and we have a lot of variables at work. I'm amazed that the Stillwaters seem to have that "one size fits all" quality for so many people.

I still have a hard time buying an offshore.
I respect the art of the kiltmaker weather it be machine or hand stitched. I would rather pay a slight bit more for a kilt made for me than an off the rack. I hear too many times people spending more to alter there kilts to get what they want rather than order what they want in the first place. I also feel the love the kiltmaker puts into a kilt and the respect for the fabric. There are East Indian companies that will manufacture acryilc kilts for next to nothing ( 10-15 dollars as long as you buy a gross ( sometimes up to 500). The price to purchase is right but I appreciate better materials and a kiltmakers workmanship more than a mass produced garment.
It's just me rambeling but I still prefer to pay for the hands on craftmanship than the mass produced. I feel better paying a kiltmaker and feel the talent and dedication the kiltmaker put into my kilts better represent the tartan there made from.
Just a thought,
Kilted Stuart

Kilted Stuart, I'll give you all that, I really like my Scottish made, made to order, wool kilts. But not for this purpose.
I need one that I can be seen in, but won't get upset when the kids spill ketsup and cotton candy on it.
Thanks for all the input.

That’ll go right to his head.
BTW - Wasn’t Iolaus Hercules’ cousin, or something?

I'm surprised how low most of you guys wear your kilts. I've always heard it should hit the top of the knee, and even be as much as an inch above. I think they look better that way, too.
From the historical research my dad and his group has done, I've heard that the Victorian standard for the bottom of the kilt is exactly mid knee; while earlier kilts fell all over the place, but usually above the knee by at least and inch or so.
I too am disappointed that SWK's only come in one length.
And while we are throwing out numbers: I'm 5ft 7in, and my ideal kilt length is 19in. I've got short legs. In my first car, I had to move the seat all the way forward just so I could get the clutch all the way open.

There you go! Ian, I would have placed you closer to 6' from the one pic! I can understand that a SWK would be too long for you.

I have to say that I don't think that Iolaus would have had problems attracting the ladies even without wearing a kilt! Some of us need the extra help, but I don't think he is one of them!
