Dyed in the wool traditional Kilt
I will soon be looking into getting a new traditional kilt but I feel like a kid in a candy store with all the options out there. Maybe my next kilt will be unique.
Now, I'm told that it is possible to get a kilt made from wool that has been colored from dyes made from plants in Scotland. Does anyone know where I can get some info on this? What's possible, prices, etc.
I realize this might be pricey but you only live once, right?
Any info from you folks across the pond would be helpful.
Chris.

Sound like a cool idea. My first thought was that if anyone would know Kathy Lare would know. www.kathyskilts.com

Chris,
I have been thinking about this since I first read the thread. Methinks our buddy Ron is on to something.

Chris,
I've worked with traditional, "vegetable" dyes for years. If you plan on wearing the kilt alot, or frequently in the sun I wouldn't do it. They are nice, much like muted colours, but certainly not as long lasting as aniline dyes.

I've read someplace that kilts made from naturally died wool have a "bouquet" (fragrance, nose, etc.) from the plants from which the colors are made.

Blu,
its possible, I guess. However, more than likely if there is any odour at all from the actual dyes, it might not be so pleasant. Think compost.

My sister was there for three months- if the luggage I helped her haul and unpack was any indication, Scotland smells like pot and stale beer.
Or maybe that's just my sister...
