Easier said than done my friend. I've gone from a 38R to a 46R in the last 15 years and gone from a 34" waist to a 38". Everything remained the same but I just got very stocky. I guess that happens naturally as some folks get older.
Chris.
P.S. I hate those folks that neither gain nor lose weight!

Very simple answer to all these questions:
Go outside.
No TV to keep you prisoner. No video games to sap your mind. No couch beconning you to lay upon it's comfortable lethargic cushions.
I spent most of my life the same size, until I started working a computer job. Added 30-50 lbs at one point, simply by being chained to a desk.
Revolt against the modern slavery of desk work. Wear your kilt with pride in the sun, where it can be enjoyed by all of natures creatures.

Barry, I sympathise with you! Six months ago, I had just one kilt in my Kollection that I could no longer get into. Now there are five, and several more that are too tight for prolonged-wear comfort. During this seemingly long winter, and suffering severe sciatica for two months of it (ie: no exercise!), I have gained two stones and increased my waist by 3". I eat very little, what I do eat is good, healthy stuff and I gave up alcohol for Lent long before Lent began!!
I am just hoping that, come Spring, I will be able to force myself to get outside and work some of it off. Fortunately, I have other kilts I can wear in the meantime. ;)

Having suffered sciatica myself - I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Take care of yourself Hamish!

For decades I had a really 'healthy' diet and exercised regularly but put on weight, very gradually but never one single ounce would depart once it settled.
Then I found Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book.
In the last year I have hardly felt I was dieting at all, but I have lost 10 inches off my waist. OK, I have just gone from huge to rather big - but if I didn't have a horror of looking like last week's party balloon I could have lost even more weight and inches.
Maybe low carbohydrate - or perhaps controlled carb dieting is a more accurate description - is not going to suit everyone, but for me it seems to be the only way to lose weight.
It really does reduce cravings and most people are never hungry - some even lose their appetite completely. There is always something you can eat - and it seems to be a real cheat - dieting should be an effort - losing weight should be an achievement of the deserving few - NAAAH - just keep eating the salmon and roast chicken and eggs and pork roast with the crackling, but don't forget the veges.

I am in the diet-and-exerise camp. The long-term health benefits make even kilt issues trivial (as if anything could be more important than kilts.) If you can keep your waist-line a constant 32 inches, pretty much every system in your body will be less stressed as you age. In particular, you'll make adult-onset diabetes very unlikely, your heart will work better and last longer, and your joints will suffer much less wear than if your grow by the one-pound-a-year that western males average.
To those who say they grow despite diet and excercise, the math is simple: you are still eating & drinking too much, eating and drinking the wrong stuff and/or exercising too little. Period.
My problem is that I still have to lose 33 pounds before I can buy any expensive clothing. I haven't had a french-fry all year, have stopped between-meal snacks, and make sure that I can see 25% of my dinner plate before I eat. Down 7 pounds in 9 weeks. I miss ice-cream so....but I intend to avoid the diabetes that hit my brother last year, and I want these knees to last.

Ham, I feel your pain. Had spinal surgery because of it 10 weeks ago, but no relief yet. I have degenerative disc disease with multiple herniations from the cervical area all the way down to the lumbar-sacral area. Visit the surgeon for a checkup in two weeks. Last visit, he said I will probably need to have more surgery. Ouch!

Darrell,
I am SO sorry to hear that - truly I am. My thoughts are with you all the way.

my kilt is tight
I had this same conversation with my doctor. His answer was plain and to the point. "Lose weight , tubby." So I did.
