Tossing it out there

Attention all kiltmakers, I have a need, and I don't think I'm the only one here.

I want a kilt cut sport coat. I'm looking for a tweed (but will consider cord) jacket at a reasonable price. I don't need an argyle or crail. I don't care for epaluettes or gauntlet cuffs and simple butons (not bone or antler) are fine. I don't need a custom fit and a matching waistcoat.

I have seen posts here about modifying an existing jacket, but I can't find second hand ones with patch pockets (I did buy a slash pocket one, and agree that once modified it will look bad). More importantly I don't trust my sewing ability.

Finally I want it at a reasonable price. The cheapest I have found any tweed kilt jacket is $219 (other that a purple argyle for $192), but I find new tweed sport coats for $75-100 regularly. ts not like the difference is like that between pants and a kilt (I recognise that a kilt takes more material, time and skill), rather it is just a slightly shorter jacket with a tapered front.

So who's up for it? I just need something to wear to church on Sunday mornings not to a Semi-Formal affair (I do have a formal jacket).

The only problem with that is, the $75 - $100 jackets are mass produced in a factory or by a room full of seamstresses in China. I don't know if there's that kind of market out there for short sportcoats to make mass production worthwhile. Although, I suppose someone with connections in Pakistan might be able to swing something.

You might find that it would be cheaper to buy a new $75 sportcoat and take it to a tailor or an alterations shop and have them do it for you.

I'm in the same boat. I have a wedding to go to in June and I have nothing to wear. I am not in the wedding party, but I was specifically asked by the bride to wear my kilt.

I'd like to dress it up a bit more than just a dress shirt, but I dont want nor need anything as formal as a PC or Argyle. Just a nice simple, kilt compatible sport coat.

Among the shirts and vest that Bobbie and I are working on for our '06 line is just this kind of jacket.

Classic cut sport coat in brown tweed. Double rear vents. Three button. leather patches on the elbows.

We have the first version done and should have a good working version in about a month.

I bought a coat with patch pockets from Old Navy for $40, and took it over to the tailor in Westminster Mall to have it altered. She was going to charge me $135 to remove the pockets, move the flaps, and re-contour the bottom edge! Needless to say, I still have the jacket in original form.

Iolaus et al, PM me if you need someone to do alterations cheap. My wife grudgingly does alterations for friends, and my mom is actually in the business of doing alterations professionally. We keep giving her a hard time for working as cheaply as she does.

Ya know, Jerry at What Price Glory gets his replica War 2 jackets made in Pakistan...where he gets the kilts made too. Wonder if he'd be up for that. Think he also sells a replica "kilt cut" Scottish Military jacket, but its just that.

Do it in grey and I'm in line. Two black tartan kilts (Braveheart and Nightstalker) don't really lend themselves to brown.
