I read that article this morning as well. Seems like another potentially plausible but still laughable explanation.
I also remember seeing in a Discovery Channel documentary that a descendent of one of the parties involved in that original photo claimed that it was actually staged as a practical joke and even showed how it was done. In the process of demonstrating the joke they were able to recreate an almost exact duplicate (the exception being the exact patterns of the ripples) of the original.
