Josh, Welcome to the forum. I do have to agree with the majority of the posts about flashing the police officer or anyone for that matter. It was not apporpriate and the next time the officer sees a gentleman in a kilt he may have a very dim view of him to start off with. Try to keep a cooler head and you'll enjoy wearing the kilt even more. Now, what is with the hail in Vacaville? I thought it was always sunny and warm there

Hi Josh,
Welcome to the board. You are lucky the cop did not pull you in, as stated by other members. Once you are not part of the main stream It calls attention to yourself (not bad but it does call for you to realize the kind of attention it attracts). Your best defence is:

Sticks and Stones
will break your bones
but Stares and Looks
are some times irritating... and dude it was a cop.

For the most part enjoy wearing your Kilt.

That's SoCal. Vacaville is a little north of San Francisco. Once you get up into northern California, climate-wise, you're in part of the northwest.

Vacaville is NE of San Francisco between there and Sacramento. It's placement between the Coastal range and the Sierra Nevada range creates some interesting weather.

It is warm (quite) in the summer, but can get lots of rain, hail, and sometimes snow.

I'm from NoCal (Sacramento area) originally hence my tag "Left on the Right Coast", I'm from the Left (West) Coast, now living on the East (Right) coast!

Perhaps we could refrain from assuming what was the officer was thinking.

I know the first time I was kilted, I was acutely aware of people looking at me. When you are that self-aware, it is quite easy to confuse a “curious stare” with a “dirty look.”

There have been several times in my police career where an ordinary citizen accused me of giving them “dirty looks,” just because I happened to look in their direction.

Case in point: I once saw a biker pull up on a beautifully restored Harley. As I stared appreciatively, he started screaming about the “damn cops” and – my personal favorite – “police harassment.”

And a wee bit of common sense - whether or not “flashing,” or “mooning” is illegal in your jurisdiction, do it to a cop and it’s a guaranteed way of getting his attention. After all, it’s not illegal (in Seattle) to give a cop a “single finger wave,” but do it to me, and I’ll take that as a signal that you want me to stop and “chat…”

And by the way, Welcome aboard Josh E! We’re a good group here, and love to discuss the finer points of kilt etiquette. Be flattered your post is generating such response!

Josh, what exactly were you trying to say about yourself by displaying your undercarriage to an officer of the law ? as well as being immature and a bit silly, it's an exhibition of plain bad manners - for which there is little excuse. If you knew what the cop was thinking - your psyche's too advanced for school !

Wearing a kilt requires that we all conduct ourselves as a classy bunch of distinquished gentlemen, after all the kilt is a classy garment.

I do admit it flashing him wasn't the most mature thing to do but I could of made the situation a lot worse if I had opened my mouth. My parents were called and told what happend and i got a very big, angry lecture. I am now not aloud to go regimental any more. So lesson learned, No more exposing body parts in public.

In summer it is normally 95-103.

As for Winter It is normally about 50 degrees in middday. The last time it snowed was about 10 years ago

I don't agree about the police officer. While his comment about a "dress" was inappropiate, we are talking about California. He might be of hispanic origin, and know next to nothing about kilts. As a police officer he might also be used to seeing a lot of crossdressers. I also feel that the officer showed remarkable restraint in not arresting Josh for indecent exposure.

I know that you didn't mean anything untoward by your comment here but having said that I have to reply that I live in East Los Angeles, I am Scotch-Irish and Nowiegian, what my mother called "Scandahoovian". I am married to a beautiful Mexican gal and am part of a great family. The neighborhood is all Mexican as is the surrounding area. Though I don't wear the Kilt every day I wear it often enough. When Kilted if I walk out to my car or to the corner store or anywhere that we would normally go in whatever garb we are wearing I have never gotten a dirty look from anyone that I have noticed and the only negative comment that I ever got was from what my wife calls an "LL", (low life). Probably illegal, but a look from me shut him up instantly, so no problem. You would not believe the 'high signs' I have gotten from so many people of latin descent. They are very appreciative of new and different things as is any group of regular folks.
My nephew graduated from the fire department and I attended his graduation Kilted and I was amazed at how many uniformed police and fire officers approached me and started friendly conversations about their heritage and whatever as if we were old friends as opposed to cop v. civilian. Bottom line? I think that the person who doesn't know that it's a Kilt would be very hard to find in any culture.
