Hmm, I yield too easily to the siren song of credit myself, Colin. That's why my wife I have allowance accounts for our fun spending. When I've saved enough for about 65% of a kilt purchase, I order it: then it seems easier to save the last 35% when I know I've got one "on the way" to pay for.

Bryan...it doesn't take that long to squirrel it away...

I too sometimes have to stop before pulling out the plastic. I love to buy stuff especially when it comes to kilt attire.

I bought my first "good" kilt from scotwebstore.com and I'm very happy with it. It's a family tartan, 8yds, 16oz, 100% wool, very traditonal and ended up right around $400 with shipping. I also have two from Stillwater Kilts that I'm happy with. One is their standard Black Stewart and one is an economy Black Watch. As was said before, the untrained eye just knows you're wearing a kilt but you will know the difference and so will any other kilted friends. I got plenty of compilments from my kilted friends the first time they saw me in my SWK that only cost me $70. The other thing is that scotwebstore.com has many packages available that include everything. Definitely go first class if you want something more formal. You'll never regret it. It's the difference between a tuxedo and a sport coat - you can look good in either but you'll always feel the difference.

I guess the question is, can you afford wool and can you wear wool. A wool kilt is the best but it has it's days when you wished you had a lighter less itchy fabric. If you can't afford a 8yrd wool then you need to go to a blend like poly- wool, PV etc. If you buy Stillwater off the rack are you going to be happy with the fit and acrylic. Can you get a more custom made kilt in alternate fabrics from good North American kiltmakers, of course. Everyone here has there favorites ( Canadian Casual Kilts), or a few favorites. All you need to decide is what best suits you. Then find the kiltmakers that will make it for you. Most of them are here on this site. You can get a lot for a little investment. Get a decent kilt to wear, then blow a little more on wool when you get the cash later.

I thought I was the only one who did that.
