I'm also curious what you have to say about the "economy" model from Celtic Croft.

    Celtic Croft Economy Kilt Review

The economy model Black Watch kilt (and fly plaid) from the Celtic Croft is a poly/wool blend. They note on their website that it is about a 9-10 oz. weight.

I found it comfortable and a very good fit (though my hip measurement is only 3 inches different than my waist). The three straps are lightweight and I wouldn't want to tug too hard on them while putting it on or off. The material is handsome and has a nice feel to it. My wife feels that it is too light and could border on the realm of being like a costume kilt. She loves the solidness of my UK gray mocker and that is her basis of comparison. I felt for the $99 it was a good value for an entry level kilt. I wore it out and about on a cold and somewhat rainy St. Patrick's Day and found it plenty comfortable. I imagine come summer I will be able to wear it with equal comfort. I think they are pretty accurate in their description on their website about this model.

All that said I don't think I would get another economy model (I had considered ordering a Royal Stewart). I think that I will wear and enjoy this one, but probably would want to move up in fabric weight for my next traditional kilt.

I HIGHLY recommend the brooches at the Celtic Croft. I picked the Nevern model to hold the fly plaid in place. It is a very handsome piece in person. I want to wear my fly plaid just to show it off.

The black flashes I ordered from them seem a bit too stiff.

I ordered a kilt, fly plaid, brooch, socks, flashes, and a sporran for just under $250 (including shipping). I feel as a newbie I got a complete outfit for a reasonable price. The folks at the Celtic Croft were very pleasant to deal with on the phone and I got everything in about 4 days.

I would absolutely order from them again. However I think my next kilts will be a Khaki AK and hopefully a knife pleated Galbraith modern kilt from Mr. Matt Newsome. After that hmmmmmm....

You're right, it gets really cold and rainy in California. That's why no one else should move here. And the summers...? Why, they're just blistering hot; too uncomfortable for anything but lightweight kilts. Fly plaids? Only when it's cold and rainy. If this wasn't kilt heaven, I'd move out. Brrrr...

Nah, I like California, really I do, but the politics of the place will keep me happily in Idaho. It seems that the politics are sending quite a few California expats to Idaho also.

Eventually I plan on moving to Mexico as it will be empty, the Mexicans having all moved to California and the Californians having all moved to Idaho.

I could have driven my convertible to the beach yesterday, but it would have to on the back of a whopping big snowplough (!)

Walked to the pub yesterday (max legal blood alcohol level is .02 here) in -15 and snow blowing in strongly from the North. Envious? Nope -eh, well YES!

Still the joys of a warm 8 yrd in a snow storm may easily stand its own against sweaty thighs on a car seat on the way to the beach... (at least I can leave the stout oout on the back porch without worry about it getting too warm...
