I think I'm going to try my hand at designing a Fire/EMS tartan (since they are combined into one department in most places in the US now) because there has to be something better than that one. Yikes!

I don't think the firefighter tartan looks too bad, I,d have to see a kilt in it, not just a small patch with only one sett shown. However, is it really a tartan, or just a plaid. I thought that Matt, or someone other expert said the sett had to repeat vertically as well as horizontally to be a true tartan.

It appears to be symetrical to me, and yes, I agree, I don't see what's so horrible about it. :confused:

Unless my monitor is screwy, I'm seeing a field of black, with red and white stripes; what's wrong with that? It's very symbolic - the black of night, when fires are their scariest; the red of the flames, thick in the center but fading as the white, symbolizing the hope and salvation the firefighters bring, takes it's place - in essence, controling it.

Perhaps not a favourite tartan of mine.. but it looks fine, as Iolaus said he symbolism seems reasonable. Isn't the good thing about all the hundreds/thousands of tartans there will something for everyone

If you want to design a tartan for firefighters, or find a way to have the word spread about the existing one, I would suggest you contact the IAFF. I'm sure they would print an article about it in their paper. If you had a kilt made in that tartan you might also get your picture in there.

Also, many departments have their of Gaelic brigades. Perhaps you could contact some of them. Don't they have a big get toghether every year?

looking through the tartan finder and came across Gretna Green... could be very appropreate for a blacksmith ? just a tought

There's always the Smith tartan. After all, the surname Smith means metal worker, or words to that effect.
