I couldn't agree more. Most of the Utilikilts, in my eyes, have quite a masculine look to them. If I ever saw a woman in one...
As for the paintball gun comments... $500 would buy you a MID level gun. Some high end paintball guns run as high as $1500. As much as I love to play paintball, I'd never drop $1500 on a gun. Maybe on a full kit with a mid level gun, but not on just a gun.

I suppose only a custom 8 yd kilt, made of hand loomed wool cut from a crofter's sheep, sewn up by an aging grandmother as she sits in her rocker next to a wood fire in a small house on her son's croft in the Highlands will suffice to satisfy your high standards?
...or maybe you're so traditional that it has to be a Great Kilt in order to be authentic enough for you?
Some of us, however, have both traditional styles, and Utilikilts, and we wear whatever we feel like when we get up in the morning (including pants). We like to have something we can trash around in, and then throw in the washer and dryer to wear the next day. Some have been known to sew some patches onto theirs - or tie-dyed them - or used them to go rock-hopping across boulder falls above the tree line (canvas is great for that). We're not trying to look "Scottish," or look like we just came from the old country, we're just wearing something comfortable.
The point is, there's many facets in the world of kilts. There's no need to trash something just because it's not good enough for you; there's a place for everything - although I have to agree about the "Spartan" - you'd never get me into it.

I am of the understanding that in a democracy we all have the right to express our opinions within reason.
I agree that not all products are for all people...thank goodness, it would be a terribly boring world if that was the case.
Any company who wishes to sell their product really should ensure that their publicity photographs show their product to the BEST advantage. Utilikilts seem not to have done this. In one picture they have not even bothered to hide the peg which is holding up the rather poor background cloth, and it looks like he just threw his jacket down at his left foot.
The whole thing does not look very professional and would not induce me to do any business with them.
See below :-

I am not slamming them, (although I think they are positively ghastly).....I am making the point that according to their own advertising they look shoddy and that perhaps they should give away a free iron with every 'kilt'.
Would you buy a pair of trousers, or indeed any other garment where stich lines look poor and and the garment looks as if it needs ironing?
I certainly wouldn't.
If anybody expressing their opinion on these 'kilts' thinks they look great and wants to purchase and wear one...then fine that is their decision and their right to do so. Whereas I, on the other hand think that they look like skirts for men, and I would not consider purchasing one...let alone wear one. that is my opinion and my right .

I have to admit that when I was first looking at buying a kilt the only contemporary kilt I'd heard of was a Utilikilt. And the pictures of it as well as the few I'd seen did not make me want to buy a contemporary kilt.
They never look tidy enough for me. But then I like my pleats crisp and my clothes without wrinkles.
I also did not like the short length. I've found that I really enjoy the high rise on a traditional kilt. While the shorter length of the UK always made it seem more skirtlike to me.
But for me that's just a reason why I won't buy the product. If it's works for others, then good for them. From those I know who like the UK look, I've never heard any of them complain about their UKs.
So I guess it's to each his own.

Not liking something, and saying so are one thing. You actually said they were poor quality. Have you ever seen a UK other than a pic. While I agree that their website may not be doing their product justice, it does stem from their bohemian - non traditional corporate ideals. however, their products are usually very well made (I've personally only had a minor problem with one of my 13 UKs - and even then it wasn't a big enough problem that I sent it back). Yes some others have received flawed kilts (Rom comes to mind), but their quality checks are getting better, and over all they do a good job, especially considering that they are one of (if not the) largest manufacturer or kilt type clothing in the world.
Again, don’t like their look (or the look of other non-traditional kilts) fine, but don't disparage quality if you've never actually seen one.
Finally for the original post that called them crappy. Coming from someone that owns a $60 e-bay kilt I find that extremely hilarious.

My $60 ebay kilt is superior to those rags, at a fraction of the cost.
It's not fair to compare my $600 tank to them, so I won't.

Not starting a fight, just want to know.
Several people have questioned UK's quality in the past, but I have never seen anyone else call them crappy or rags. What is your opinion based on?
And (to go with the other thread about one UK rep putting down a competitor) I'm not calling your Heretage of Scotland kilt crap or not a real kilt, but there have been many here that have. I myself own a SWK and for the $70 I paid for it, it was worth it (heck I'm seriously considering getting a Saffron). By the same token if it was worth $70 then my UK's are all worth what I paid as well (and them some).
So, do you just not like the style? Did you get one that fell apart? Did Otto tick you off some how? Give me a justification for crappy rags.

You take a shot like that and claim you're not starting a fight? Bull.

I don't know Otto. He's probably a hell of a guy. I think the style is awful. The one that fell apart was a friend's, not mine. I couldn't talk him out of buying it at an Irish festival. He won't do it again.
In truth, I'd have no problem with them, at all, if they were sold for the $20 - $30 they're worth. And, I have absolutely no problem with people disagreeing with me and buying them for whatever they feel like paying.
I will express my opinions about them, however, and I don't much care who likes it.

I had no problem with your opinion that you don't like them. Just want to know why. Aparently you had a friend that had a problem. What was it? Did he call UK and try to get it rectified?
I have no problem with a legitimate complaint, but if you're going to bash a product at least give a reason, not "they suck, because they suck"

Bryan...the problem with thinking up snappy comebacks is that you ensure you'll never need them...
