James... Jim... Jimmy...
is a very common name in Scotland....
"Jimmy" like "Jock" is a blanket stereotype name for anyone fraim Scotland....
it's "Paddy" in Ireland...
an "Joe" in 'merica...

I kinda suspected it was something straight forward... and anytime I've heard it, it's not been derogatory at all... But that seems not always the case with these sorts of things.

mai faither-in-law is named Jim... (arr "Wee Jimmy"- by his dauchters)
he told me that when ever they went oan family trips
(when his daughters were still wee weans)
no matter where they went in Scotland, England, Wales, or Ireland- at some point
some stranger would say "how ya doin' Jimmy" or "ok, Jimmy" or "what'll ya hae tae drink, Jimmy" or something similar...
and his dauchters were all amazed that everywan kent (knew) their Dad....
Jim still plays it oop... "aye, ever'wan kens me, ai'ma famous mon, ya ken" he likes tae say....
