Bear Attack

Bears have spread into this area, too. Fortunately, the state has opened up a hunting season for them. I've seen them from my vehicle, but that's all, so far.

They've destroyed plenty of bird feeders and garbage cans around here.

And as for swinging about one's kilt bollock naked at an enraged bear...Riverkilt,that's bought a wry smile to my face! But I did hear something about "playing dead" once upon a time with bears. You local blokes may well know more about that caper.

At least never run away, bears have hunting sense like dogs do anyway. And bears don't eat dead pray.

I would prefer rifle, bears run over 60kph and if you take your shot with a revolver from within good range to fire one (around 25m) then you only have one chance... Better take the shot earlier with rifle

Yep. I'd go with a .458 Winchester Model 70 Safari Express. It's an elephant gun. Bears are big.

This is one black bear that won't cause anyone any more trouble since it's one of my sporrans now, also the claw at the bottom was once part of a giant Kodiak. This is my second attempt at posting picks so bear with me....no pun intended...

but seriously, that bear attack was a tragedy, and certainly not usual behavior for a black bear, who normally avoid people except those they have trained to approach them with food and cameras. Kodiak or northern brown and grizzly bears though, are not timid or docile since they are used to being the biggest and meanest things in the valley. In that case if they think you are on the menu only a heavy rifle will save you--you will not frighten or outrun them.

There also has been a recent mountain lion attack on a child hiker. It leaped on the last one in line of a group, but was frightened away by the rest making noise and frantic gestures (didn't hear of a kilt being involved but it probably would have worked). Mountain lions also usually avoid people but burgeoning numbers of protected cougars and housing developments are leading to more frequent contacts.

I'm thinking a .454 casull with a hardened 325 gr. fully jacketed bullet; that hollowpoint might not penetrate the skull, and any other placement isn't guaranteed to drop him in time.

I've got a 16" stainless .454 lever-action that would be my first choice as a defence arm if I ventured into bear country for anything but hunting them; at which point, my choice would become much bigger.

If we were talking the big bears I'd want alot more than a .44 mag, but around here we get the occasional black bear and not even the larger specimens of the species so the .44 is more than enough backup. My old Redhawk was more than enough to do what needed done.
