    Why?

I guess I'm a bit bemused at this point. So far, I have not bought a kilt pin, waiting until I found a "special" one. Then I read Ham's posts about having a different pin for each kilt. Now, I'm reading posts that say just go to the fabric shop and buy a big safety pin! On top of that, we're told not to pin through both layers of the kilt apron--just the top apron.

Uh, so what's the purpose of this? I'm wearing a little, cheap, Chinese made safety pin on the top layer of my kilt apron? That's supposed to add weight enough to prevent kilt "blow up?" I could see a Celtic/Scots/traditional pin or badge, but a safety pin? Uh, what's the point?

(Sorry, I don't mean to be trouble... )

Longshadow, the pin that is mentioned, shaped like a diaper pin, is much larger than a real diaper pin. It is just in the same shape. The one I have on one of my kilts is made from brass, probably 6-7" long, 1-2" wide, and weighs 4-5 oz. Plenty of weight and heft to keep down the front apron. Will post a pic if I can find one.

The "safety pin" in question is similar to the kilt pin used by the Highland regiments of the British Army. Since so many customs and traditions of Highland dress come from said regiments, I believe it is a nice tribute to the "Jocks" and their service. It also looks very good with say wear -- plain and simple.

    Here's an example:

This has been an interesting thread. I know that I'll put virtually anything on the apron to hold it down in windy conditions. If I'm playing "The House of Blues"... I'll wear a few of their pins. If I'm at an Irish event, I'll wear a heavy Eire Harp. If I'm at Tartan Day festivities, I'll wear something more traditionally Scottish. Hell, my Elvis "TCB" lightning bolt pin is one of my favorites.

The kilt pin is one of the EASIEST way to personalize your own outfit and show your individuality while looking like many others in kilts. We've had discussions on the various "kilt belt buckles" that you can buy... and the pins are exactly the same.

If you're into that "wear what you want" mindset, the is a perfect accessory option to further your individuality.

Onion, I was indeed a die-hard Next Generation fan. I'm also old enough to remember watching the original series in prime time. Never have liked the other versions (Voyager, etc.)
Did you every go by to see the folks selling the ebay kilts?

true confession time: LOVED next Generation - Picard was the best captain of them all - yes i said it - BRING IT ON!!!! Janeway was a close second followed by Kirk with the guys from DS9 & Enterprise ducking it out for last place. I have a soft spot for scott bacula from his quantum leap days, but the show just brought him down. The guy from DS9 was too damned arrogant & pretentious for my tatstes.

ANYWAY back to kilts - that rat b^(%@#d never got back to me to set up a time to look at the kilts - i think it was mentioned in another thread somewhere that someone bought at least one & was awaiting arrival. maybe we coudl get a review from him
