My advice, for what it's worth, on an outfit for each occasion (informal and formal). Remember that this is only one outfit and there are countless other combinations that will work just fine:

Informal: Tan or light brown button down shirt with sleeves rolled up or down to your preference (could substitute appropriate T-shirt or Polo Shirt); brown Belt (2.5 to 3-inch wide with brass buckle); oatmeal or greenish hose...or even hiking socks...pushed down to your brown hiking boots (I prefer Doc Martens but you can choose whatever you like); Brown Freelander Mrk III Sporran. If you choose to use a black belt, get one with a silver buckle and switch to black boots and black sporran. Try and select hose/socks and shirt that are single color (or subtle pattern) and aren't too garish or they'll detract from the kilt.

Formal: White tuxedo shirt; black bow tie; off-white hose; red or green flashes; black belt with silver buckle; white rabbit fur sporran with silver adornment; black Prince Charlie jacket and waist coat or black Argyll jacket and 5-button vest; silver, black or pearl studs and cufflinks; black dress shoes or black Ghillie Brogues; sgian dubh with black handle and silver or gem top tucked into top of hose on side of whichever leg matches your handedness (i.e. if you're right handed, tuck sgian dubh into top of hose on side of right leg).

The key is that silver accents go with black and brass accents go with brown. Don't wear brass buckles/adornment with black belt/sporran/shoes or silver buckles/adornment with brown belts/sporran/shoes, etc. Also, on average, black is more formalish than brown.

Only a guideline and others might disagree...but there you go.

I don't like sporran chains for regular wear - they tend to wear spots in the kilt itself, or so I've been told, and they just look too formal for me.
I'd agree. The chain is only good if you're going formal.

I figured as much. I just didn't want to end up looking like a slob my first time in a kilt.

I think this is the best option. If only because I don't have brown shoes...

That sounds about right. I'm not really a fan of tartan flashes.

Really? It seems to me that oatmeal really wouldn't go with such a dark tartan. But then I really have no idea what I'm talking about. Would something darker work?

    That is the plan.

Christopher: The formal wear isn't so much of a problem for me. I've basically got that figured out already. Won't be wearing it any time soon, though. Good advise on the informal wear, though. It's the shirts that I keep getting hung up on. No idea what goes with a kilt. I just don't want to end up looking good from the waist down and like a tool form the waist up...

Or the borderline between semi-formal and formal:

Charcoal tweed Argyll jacket over a dress shirt with cufflinks, a self-colored tie in a lighter gray than the jacket, but not so light it'll get "lost" on the shirt, black belt with silver buckle, silver sporran chain, black leather and fur sporran with the three nickle "bell" tassels, cream/white hose, flashes, and black ghillie brogues.

Oh, and a tank in the Weathered Lochaber tartan.

T-shirts are fine. Most shirts are fine. Where I've seen many people end up looking like a "tool" is wearing a Saxon or Yankee jacket with the kilt.

It just looks *wrong* because the bottom edge is cut so much below the waist.

It's all pretty simple, just go here http://www.trulyscottish.com/kiltview/kiltstore.php

Now for personal opinion to go with the Ogilvie tartan.
Belt and Sporran - I would go with plain black to start
Hose - Oatmeal, Lovat Green, bottle green, or blue depending on what shirts you would wear most often (I have 2 pairs of them, but I just don't like the cream hose anymore).
Flashes - Most shops will include or can make tartan flashes to match your kilt.
Shirts - Rugby (not striped), dress, button up, golf, etc all work pretty well for casual yet a bit more dressed up.

Caradoc: Er... now this is kind of embarassing. What are saxon and yankee jackets, exactly?

Colin: Huh. Neat link. That should help. Thanks.

Regular suit jackets if I am not mistaken. I have tried, but they just don't look as good with a kilt as a jacket actually made to be worn with a kilt.

"Standard" two or three button suit coats, like one would buy at a "Big and Tall" store, or any department store.

I've had good luck wearing tans, light browns and grey/greens with my greenish tank (I have a tank in Scottish National, which is pretty similar to your tartan selection). Also, black, tan or brown polo is fine. As for T-shirt, as long as it's not lewd or obnoxiously bright, it should work just fine. You might stay away from lighter or royal blues, however, as those might clash with the green unless you're careful. For confirmation, ask the nearest female if the colors you've selected "work". For example, I have a tank in Scottish American (which is mostly blue and purple based) that would just never work with tans and browns. My wife is always quick to give me the look when things just don't match.
