Ideally, all leather should match, hose the same color as the shirt, flashes the same as a prominent color in the tartan. A dress jacket must be made to wear with kilts since modern suit and sports jackets are much too long.

My "business" dress is as follows: choice of kilt, white dress shirt, charcoal jacket and hose, flashes and tie to match one of the dominant colors of the kilt, and black shoes, belt, and sporran.

These are off-white.
I'm not a big fan of white hose... I think the pure white hose tend to be distracting.. Just my 2 cents..

Personally I still prefer the lovat or the darker hose. I will get a pair of stone coloured hose to go with the Weathered MacKenzie when I order it. The oatmeal colour I was referring to are different than the offwhite coloured hose though. You can see the difference here: http://scotwebstore.com/sr_strut_kilthose.html

I agree. I like cream/off-white better for formal gear than pure white or any other color.
For semi-formal, I might be tempted to match the hose to the jacket, but for formal, I don't really think any color but white or cream is appropriate.
Just my opinion, though.

I think the general rules of fashion are more or less applicable and therefore I would concur with comments made above: leather should match, silver with black leather and copper with brown leather, etc. etc.
The only additional advice I would offer is to start with the most versatile options and built dress alternatives from there. Therefore, your first belt and sporran should be black as it is easier to dress down black than dress up brown. First hose, I would suggestion, should be off-white which will do for formal and, for casual wear, one can wear socks rather than hose.
I guess one other thing, the tartan of your kilt is a pattern that is difficult to complement. Therefore, unless you know how to dress yourself, you should stick to very plain shirts and other clothes to wear with your kilt. Again, this is a general fashion rule: only the fashion savy can match a striped shirt with a checked jacket and a floral tie.
Good luck.

The rules for day wear are much less strict, and could almost be tossed out the window in my opinion. When you dress up you need to pay more attention.
I'd say start with off-white hose. and definately get tartan flashes. Even if you don't wear the flashes regularly you will be glad you have them for formal events.
That tartan is sharp. I'd probably go with black leather, but if you like brown that'd work too. If you're worried because you only have brown shoes, don't be.I often break the rules, and the only people who know any better are here at this forum. If you feel the need to miss match leather just accessorize with other articles of clothing that match your shoes. For example; If you must wear brown shoes with a black sporran, match the shoes with brown flashes, and either a brown sweater, vest, or coat. Of course, if you read on you'll see that most don't agree with me.
Anyway, the biggest thing is to wear your kilt proudly.
