    Help with school project on Scotland

    My 6th grader is working on a big report about Scotland. In a previous report he (we) built a scale model of Invergarry Castle, which precipitated plans the visit Scotland (and Invergarry) next summer.

    One of the parts of this report is to write a page about, and illustrate, facets of Scotland (present or historical) that begin with each letter of the alphabet. K is for kilt, T is for tartan, etc. Not surprisingly, he's stuck on X, Y, and Z. (Yes, he already asked the teacher if he could use this site for the X and she said no.)

    Anyone have any great ideas about X, Y, and Z??

    (This post was brought to you by the letters K and S, and the numbers 6 and 9)

    He he could always use X for the X-shaped cross, the Saltire, which is on the Scottish Flag.

    Cheers,

    Z = Zymology
    The art of fermentation and distilling.
    Not sure whether teacher would allow anything about alcohol for a school project but its all I could come up with.
    For what its worth, I found this link under Z for Zymology on the Historic Scotland website.

    The teacher should consider it a vocabulary lesson. I know that *I* learned something today!

    Maybe dad can "help" with this part of the project.

    ZEENDI, n. Also zeendy, zaindie (Rnf.), zeenty (Edb.), zinty (Ayr.); zid (Ork.). The numeral one, as used in sheep-counting and in children’s counting-out rhymes in various parts of Scotland.

    Can't say I've ever heard any of these words used although I've lived in Scotland all my life. So that's me also been taught a vocabularly lesson this evening. In this area the numerals are yin, twae, threi (pronounced "thriy" ). Although Zilch is commonly used to mean zero and there are plenty of Glasgow words that begin with a "Z"
    Zatrigh' = Is that right?
    Zatso = Is that so?
    Zerzastoa'er = There is a pretty young lady.
    Not heard of Zinty but a Gizinty is a drainpipe (from "goes into" ie what the water flows into.)
