Sooooo, why don't more Scots wear kilts?

Not every region of the US has the same predilection for "cowboy hats". I live in a town of 160 thousand souls. Not a Houston by any means. At the local coop yearly meetings about three thousand attend. Out of that number I can point out an easy 500 with some sort of "cowboy hat". You can tell by the looks of those hats that they're not wearing em for special occasions. I can't tell you the number of pickup trucks I pass on the highway with a "cowboy hat" on the dashboard. If you see more kilts in Scotland than you see "cowboy hats" in the US, it's because your in the wrong state.

Aggie, that's kind of my point. I know I am not likely to see a bunch of cowboy hats in Washington, Oregon, or California (the states I have seen most often). Most people won't see kilts in Glasgow or Edinburgh unless there is a rugby or football match or the kilt wearer is a tourist guide.

So as the outsider looking in sees the country defined by one thing, the people there see the reality. Kilts are part of Scotland's history (the highlands mostly) but not all of Scotland. The same goes for the US. I am sure there are tourists that show up in the US expecting a John Wayne flick to play out in front of them (aren't you guys all cowboys?), or dog sledding in Canada (don't you know we are all French eskimos?), or Lederhusen in Germany, etc. So the "not many kilts in Scotland" attitude may change depending which part of Scotland you are in, what you are doing in Scotland, and who you have met.

The kilt came back to Scotland as a Victorian item for glamour and a more formal appearance. So while some lived on the croft and wore the belted plaid, it is not that day to day wear that would have been passed down these past few hundred years.

If I'm reading your point correctly, then I would agree. By the way...I looked at the front of this thread at that "Texas straw kilt" and that doesn't look like Texas straw to me. I think maybe someone has substitued a Pakistani variety of straw.

I was thinking the same thing. It may actually be Canadian straw, but shown up in Pakistan
