Ever consider trews?

Seriously, a pair of trews in Black Watch look very good with the Argyll jacket and waistcoat. I've seen it done by several gents at Burns Suppers. Same with PC's and trews. It gives you the "Scottish" look when you can't wear a kilt.

You might be able to find a pair of Black Watch trousers fairly quickly (I know Polo used to make some) that would look sharp with that outfit.

As others have said, check with your date, and then your school, but don't rule the kilt out just yet.

I agree with Todd. If you are going to wear pants, go for trews. If not wear the kilt and stand out from the crowd. Don't see it as taking away from your date, but rather drawing more positive attention to her. After all, she must be the most special girl there to have a date in a kilt.

I agree, but at least push the kilt for awhile, I know you can probably wear it whenever you want and same with the tuxedo, but everyone else will be wearing a black or white tux, waistcoat, shirt etc. How about wearing the kilt and argyll jacket with some dulled down accesories...simple tie, plain hose, plain sporran, no hat, or perhaps a dark tartan to keep a clean look...I think it would look great without over advertising yourself!

I'll ask her about the kilt, but now that i've graduated high school (i'm going at her request and invitation, as she is still in high school) I think it might be better to go with pants, as fun as it is to wear the kilt, because I'm a guest, and I don't want to draw toooo much attention to myself. I'm still tempted, and i'll see what she says. I'd enjoy wearing the kilt, but I wouldn't feel at all repressed if she thought I ought to go with the trousers.

My main concern is whether those black pants look okay with the argyll jacket, since it's cut to be worn with the kilt. I also wonder if those silver-colored buttons are too much. I knew I'd get a lot of support here for the idea of wearing the kilt, which is great. Thankyas.

Obviously most of the lads here will be cheering for the kilt but it's good that you're considering her perspective on the thing.

Just for reference, trousers worn with formalwear usually have a satin stripe down the outsides of the legs. Your black pants look okay but I get the impression that they might have a few pleats in the front and that they don't flow with the very slim look of the jacket and vest. ...this is where we've been finding those eton jackets that convert to kilt formalwear jackets so readily...they do have pants that have the aforementioned stripe and that might be cut a little slimmer...it's my understanding that pleats in mens' trousers are a definite "out" this year. The plain front pants might be an improvement.

I do really like the silver/grey shirt and tie...that's very nice...very "hip hollywood type at the Oscars".

I'm with Cajunscot. If you wish to wear that jacket and waistcoat with pants, trews would be the way to go. They just seem too formal to go with regular dress pants. If you are going to wear a tux, then rent a tux. I think you should go in the kilt (but check with your lady fair.) Wear it with confidence and flair. But most of all, spend your time during the evening admiring and calling attention to your lady. Whatever kudos you receive for the kilt, turn the attention to her. She will be delighted to have a kilted gentlemen as her escort. Whatever you do, have a great time.
