Question about hose and "sturdy" legs

I've been overweight since my teens; I've also been a very avid walker and hiker since high school. As a result, my legs are pretty beefy; as one friend puts it, I don't have calves so much as full-grown steers.

I am considering getting a more traditional kilt, and of course that would go with a more traditional outfit than the UK, Birkenstocks and t-shirt that have become my usual weekend wear. My first concern is with finding hose that will fit; the second is that socks which go much past my ankle usually become too stretched out to use after a few wearings. I like the look, but can't afford to buy hose that needs to be replaced constantly. Any suggestions?

They're pricey, but if you send them your measurements they'll make a pair to fit you perfectly, and with proper care they should last for several decades.

Several people on the forum have done business with the company Tartan Hiker mentioned. It's received nothing but good reviews, the prices are high but worth it.

    Hmmh, one word, FLASHES!

And if you don't have flashes that match, a pair of correct sized rubber bands work great. That is my soluiton for when I don't have flashes to match (which happens quite often!).

I will echo the praise for AlmostUnwearoutable. They cost a bit to get, but they can be made to your measurements and they are a quality product. I have two pair and will be getting more in different colors in the future.

Also, check out this thread for casual hose:

I've found that even some flashes are too small for my legs. Sure the elastic will stretch around my calf. But then it starts to tighten again, so that after wearing them for a while I wind up with a dented ring around my leg where the flashes rest.

    Almost Unwearoutable...

Add me to the list of Xmarkers who endorse Almost Unwearoutable for quality kilt hose. I own two pair, and they are simply the best kilt hose I have ever owned since I first started wearing Highland attire. Yes, you pay a bit more, but they are worth every penny, and they do live up to their name -- almost unwearoutable.

    Cheers,

    Todd

For a lower price, but with less selection of colors, there's also Hamilton Dry Goods, which have also gotten good reviews here.

Tech Bear, Thanks for posting the question. I have been trying to make up my mind about Almostunwearoutable for a few months and after hearing the reviews from other forum members I can feel good about ordering from them. Thanks again!
