    Canned Haggis and Other Delights

Was at the Woodland (CA) Games last weekend and saw the vendor selling canned haggis in three versions, beef, sirloin beef, and vegetarian. No mutton version; they said it just doesn't sell here in the States. I tasted the beef and vegetarian versions. Palatable if you like that sort of thing. They also have whisky and rum cakes and imported foods as well.

If anyone would care to check it out, here's their site:

When Haggis is done right, It is a very tasty treat. I have had Haggis in serveral occasions and I enjoyed it every time.

I first learn about haggis when I was watching the original Highlander movie. It was during a scene when Connor MacLeod was trying to decsribe what a haggis was to Rameriz. Instantly I thought that was something that I wanted to try.

To me, eating the internal organs of an animal isn't gross at all.

I get Haggis from Tesco they do "Halls" and another which is more expensive, The Breakfast on Robertsons site looks mouth watering although I would class it as a full English Breakfast, a true Scots breakfast would be Porridge or a Highland breakfast would be kippers smothered with Marmalade. As well as Haggis id reccoment Black pudding, the bits are a bit chewy but its nice.

    Description:
A cold cereal that isn't cooked that one can easily adapt to what they have locally.

    Ingredients:
    2 cups old fashioned oats
1 1/4 cups cold low fat milk or my favorite, Vanilla soy milk

the following ingredients are optional, just use what ever you have available or what you like, I'm just posting the way I like it.

    1/2 cup fresh sliced strawberry's
    1/2 cup fresh blackberry's
1 apple washed and cored, finely diced
    1/2 cup of raisins
1/3 cup of whatever nuts happen to be handy
4 big heaping tablespoons of honey, whatever you prefer ,I like Lemon Creme myself

    Directions:
Place oats in a bowl and add milk. Let stand at room temp for 45-60 minutes. Add and mix into the oats all of the ingredients. Refrigerate 2-3 hours before serving.
Ah yes, another great way to dress the oats. Much appreciated. Just got some steel cut (Scottish) oats to replenish the stock. Do you think they would work instead of old fashoned oats? We're going to try your original recipe this weekend. Later may try with the steel cut since I like the texture a little better.

    Cheers, Bill

Bill, either way is fine, I like both style of oats nd do not have a preference, it all comes down to what you like.
