How do you WANT to wear it? That's really all that matters ... kilting is about freedom as much as tradition. Once you've put on anything with your kilt outside of traditional norms then you have wandered into free teritory, my friend.

It depends on what and where
in town - dress shirts, polos tucked in, tshirts could go anyway.
on the trail - no dress shirts, entirely depends how cold or warm it is.
    Sweater/sweatshirts never tucked in.

As for style with the pleats and belt and sporran my favorite jacket hangs to the top of the pleats hiding the blet, sporran, sewn down part of the pleats.

Be they traditionals or moderns, my shirts are invariably tucked in. Sweaters and sweatshirts aren't, because they shouldn't be, but other than that, I never have my shirt untucked (that goes for when I'm trousered, as well.)

When I was trousered, shirts almost always were out, now always in.

About the only way I go "shirt out" is with sweaters, or a t-shirt tucked with a short, straight bottomed sport shirt worn open as an over shirt. If I'm trousered, the overshirt is usually long (covering most of my butt), but not with a kilt.

My typical rule is that if it has buttons, I tuck it. No button, no tuck. I follow the same rule when I'm giving in to tryanny.

I generally wear my shirts untucked, both with kilts and trousers, unless dressing up. I have yet to dress up the kilt, though, and usually wear a polo shirt with it. My polo shirts are pretty short though, and so stay untucked.

One great thing about this forum is the variety of styles we get to see from one another. There is a time, place and person for everything!

Personally, I'm always tucked in (except for sweaters) because I like the look and feel of the wide belt. (Also I've lost 25 pounds the last year, and kind of like showing that too.)
