Well, I know I'm a Buchanan and my crest is this. But I've heard several different stories about it. About the chief taking the crown from someone after a battle....a bunch. Anyone know for sure? or got a better story?

Looks alot like the Robertson Badge, with a different saying.

All I know about that is that the Robertsons were given permission to "uphold" the crown after they caught and killed some royal assassin.

I'm sure the details will be filled in by those who know more than I.

I'd be interested in finding out if the two are related somehow.

    Buchanan and Robertson...

    Buchanan:

The crest for the Buchanans is actually a ducal cap, not a crown. Notice the difference between the one on the Buchanan Society's page and the one that Matt sent. The Buchanan Society has designed and been granted its own arms from the Lyon Court which are different from the ancient arms of the Chief -- there is no Chief at present of the Buchanans.

a good article that describes the process of designing the arms for the society can found here:

I'll have to do some research on the Robertson's badge.

    Cheers,

    Todd

Slightly different Buchanan question. I notice on some web sites it says the Buchanan tartan is a "universal" tartan. Anyone know where that idea came from? I have not seen it in older documents. Is it another way of folk selling tartan to those who do not have a named connection?

    Smile Definately not Universal

Ive been told all Buchanans were color blind and needed sunglasses.
But the Tartan isnt for everybody. It takes a special sort to wear the modern colors. I prefer the muted ancient myself.
