Yu are right about the 'gift lists' they always seem like just trinkets.
The Scottish Quaiche sure sounds like a wonderful way to remember the wedding and your friendship.

If he carries a pocket knife, maybe get him a nice new pocket knife. I would suggest either Cold Steel, Spyderco and last but not least Benchmade.

I wasn't sure what a "Scottish Quaiche" but a moment on Google fixed that....one does learn alot of different things on XMarks.

It doesn't absolutely HAVE to be older than 12 years.

I've had some rather fine single malts that were between 7 and 10 years old -like the Ardbeg 10 Year, or the Speyburn 10 Year, or even the Loch Dhu 10 Year (and, yes, I'm aware that the last is akin to blasphemy.)

And although not a single malt, I did like the 8-10 year blends of Sheep Dip.

What to do if the best man (gasp!) doesn't like Scotch whisky at all?

Or, as in my own unfortunate case, can no longer drink the stuff?

Better a quaich, and let him fill it.

(Although if anyone wants to give me whisky, I'll happily fill my flask and share it around even if I can't drink it.)

I have to throw my vote for a quaich as well. I recently got one for myself and love it. It looks great on display and has been used appropriately a few times. My quaich looks similar to this

Another idea to go along with the quaich is as Todd suggested, a pin (if he were wearing a kilt) and a hip flack or as I did for my groomsmen a tankard with an engraving on it.

I got all my groomsmen flasks (as seen in the do's and don'ts thread). In addition I gave my bestman a scarf in his family tartan (even though he is not a kilt wearer...yet).
