There are several ways to use a wider strap. One is to replace the wire hoop on the rear of the buckle. The other is to stitch on narrower pieces at both ends of the belt. This looks neater than cutting down, and is the way many western wear belts are made. You do have to be careful or the buckle looks disproportionate or you end up with a belt that looks like a weight lifter.
