The ones I got at Walmart are brand name Ozark Trail, and I wore them nearly every day last summer, and have started wearing them nearly as often this summer too. They have a heavy rubber sole with good traction, and the uppers are some sort of rubberized synthetic.
So far they have proven VERY durable, and the sole is not even beginning to show signs of wear.

They are comfortable to walk in, though over extended periods the footbed does lack sufficient cushion. Anything more than about five or six hours of walking and my feet start to hurt. Of course, even in shoes that cost 20 times as much my feet start to hurt after six hours.

I only paid $10 for them, so even if I threw them out now and got something else I would have gotten my monies worth. As it is they seem to have at least another year in them, and that includes a year of beating pavement, sand, water, rock, and overgrown trail.

    All in all good choice.

Over here they are 'all terrain' sandals, and very good for general walking over much of the country, and for day to day wear.

The grip is as good as boots for much of the time, but they do not offer as much protection as boots: so are not so good for such things as river crossing, scree running and the like, where protection is essential.

Too thorns can get at the feet.

The foot bed does need to be washed regularly if you wear them without socks, at least mine do. They are supposed to have an anti-microbial footbed but they definately develop an odor problem unless you wash them.

so, are you saying only Hamish can wear sandals and hose with a kilt, with him being a Doctor of Kilt Aquisition?

I for one am a big fan of the kilt with sandals. I think it is a pretty good casual look, and especially when it's really hot out. When I'm back in Bangkok, I'll probably wear sandals most of the time while kilted. I especially think it looks good with a nice casual polo shirt with the kilt.

I echo everything folks have said. I wear my Keens with my UKs all the time.

If you are buyng on-line, I would recommend Zappos.com. They typically have a greater selection of styles and colors than REI. The shipping is free but the price per shoes is more ($90v$95).

    Cheers,

Well, the link doesn't work up there anymore, but this is an interesting old thread. I have a black and a brown pare of sandals that have straps around the ankles that I wear with my BZK. I also have a pare of black leather slides, that I have worn with hose. Those remind me a little of ghillies but without a back. It is too hot out here for hose in the summer...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I think that the sandals in question were by Keen, like the H2 models. These have elastic lacing up the top of the foot, securing several straps which perhaps resemble the uppers of a ghillie brogue.

Ok, that's interesting. I've seen several sandals lately that are leather and have triangular pieces cut out of the sides to be a little like if there were several bands of leather going across the foot. They don't really look like ghillies but they kind of have a hint of the idea.
