Please... do not dishonor or disgrace it for vanities sake or to "shock" people. If you are not of celtic origines, and you choose to wear a kilt... welcome! "Cued Mille Failte!" You are always welcome in my camp!

    That's exactely my opinion!
Two years ago I worn my Black Watch kilt at School Christmas party and my best friend did the same. We looked good and both mates and teachers admired us, expecially for our way of wearing it, proudly and seriously; they said we were "scottish gentlemen" and we felt great. The year after a classmate went to Scotland, bougth one (of awfully bad quality indeed) and worn it at the party believing himself a star, wearing a Santa red hat too and a fashion female belt, behaving as a clown to attracted everione's attention. It was more like a show girl than a man. He incurred in our deepest blame but someone was able to laugh and enjoy that pitiful show!!!
We tried to tell him to wear the kilt with dignity ad honor but he didn't (and doesn't) care.
This outburst to say that I may understand and share the vanity side of wearing the kilt but I absoloutely BLAME who wears that garment just for mere exhibition.
    CHEERS,

 The only "dignity" I'm going to attach to the act of wearing a kilt will be the same dignity I'd attach to any other choice of garment; it's just another piece of clothing I don't want to look stupid in. The simple act of wearing a kilt in public as casual wear is outragous enough to turn heads and be considered "shocking", and I'm ok with that.

I'll admit at times I like how a kilt makes you stand out from a crowd, but I don't agree with using it as an excuse to make a spectacle of myself. For me, it's not so much the dignity of the garment, but the dignity of the person.

Considering the reason tartans became more elaborate over the years instead of staying a basic check was wealth and vanity, vanity seems to be a traditional reason to wear the kilt.
