    You Need a Quilt?

I had a kilt that needed just a little hemming and since it was of the economy variety I brought it to my local tailor. A nice couple run it and I believe they are both from Greece (look and accent, best guess.) I call on thursday to see if my kilt is ready and get the Mrs. who is not as fluent in English as her husband.
    Conversation:

Me: I was calling to see if my kilt was ready.
    Her: What?
Me: I was calling to see if my kilt was ready.
Her: You have a Quilt? For dry cleaning?
Me: No, a KILT. It's a men's garment with pleats in the back. You were to hem it.
Her: What type of quilt was it? We have many.
Me: No, It's a KILT. (then I heard myself say the dirty words) It's a men's garment but looks like a skirt with nice pleats in the back.
    Her: I'm sorry I still don't know.
Me: It's similar to a ladie's skirt but made for men.
Her: Ooohhh, yes, the man's skirt, why didn't you just say that from the start. Its' ready, you can pick it up anytime.
    Me: Thank you.

They're really nice people and do very nice work. You'd have to do an upclose to really see any work had been done. That and they only charge me $1 per foot for hemming (Hand sewn) so I can get away with less than $30 for hemming on any Kilt I need help with. (My length tends to lean more towards 21-22" than the standard 24" I can get from someplace like SWK so I need hemming on my off the racks.)

Hopefully soon, with a little more weight loss, I can see if she can take one in for me.

Well I always book my kilts into the cleaners as skirts-for they charge more if I take them in as kilts.

The siren call of saving money is one of the most attractive sounds known to mankind and kiltwearers alike!

Yes... The kilt does present it's "challanges" for both kiltwearers and the public at large.

For 100's of years kilts have been washed by hand. Why take it to a cleaner and have noxious chemicals put on your clothing which will sit next to your body and also take out all the lanolin in the wool? Any other reasons to hand wash. That is a funny story.

They are tailors first and do dry cleaning as a service to their tailoring customers. Unfortunately when I buy a kilt off the rack I need the tailoring to get my length correct. She does a good job on my economy level kilts so I can tolerate the kilt vs. quilt discussions.

I have a similar experience when I wear my kilt to the local hibachi grill. They understand that it's a historical man's garment, but eh ... the sk**t word gets used.
