I wear my SWK Nylon Sporran with all my kilts for several reasons. 1) It keeps all my stuff in one place. When I wore pants, they all had 4 pockets and I had a routine for where I kept stuff. My kilts are all different and I tend to forget where I put my checkbook or wallet due to changing pocket configuration. 2) The sporran readily identifies my kilt as a kilt. It completes a kilted outfit. 3) I'm used to wearing a belt pack (fanny) out for the same reason, so it was a natural progression.
While home or at the homes of friends or family, I will take off the sporran. Wear it or not, it's a choice I make for convenience or comfort, rather like my choice of kilts for below the waist apparel. I do it for me, not someone else.
Semi-formal or formal is a whole different matter and I defer to the experience I've gained at Xmarks and the traditionalists (thanks Hamish).

I agree that the general design is pretty cool but...balls belong under the kilt, not hanging form your belt. Though I'm sure these will sell to the more sex-centric crowd.

Just to clarify...
I seldome wear sporrans with my Utilikilts - but when I so its for a feeble attempt at "style" rather than to carry things or worry about the UK looking more Scottish. Don't know that a Shoshone bag contributes much to the "Scottish" look.
Now with my UK Brown Leather I do need a sporran to carry stuff and my Brown Freelander fits well for that. But I'm just as likely to wear a vest if its cool enough.
Ham, not really responding to you, was gonna make the point before I saw your post, that a UK with a sporran doesn't really have to be for "need."
Obviously, the wild and crazy sporrans that started this thread were done for "style." Rather than function, or to look like a kilt.

Never worn a sporran with a UK, but there have been times while wearing an original or a mocker, that I have worn a waist belt. While there is plenty of room in the pockets for everything I carry, digging for it can be a pain, so redistributing some to a waist belt (see didn't say fanny pack) or a sporran has a practical side.

I think Ham made some very good points. There is certainly nothing Scottish about a Utilikilt, and trying to make it appear like a Scottish kilt just doesn't fit with the style of a UK. About as far as I go is wearing kilt hose (no flashes or sgian dubh) with a UK if the weather is cool or I need to be a little more dressed up.

As with Hamish and NewKilt-The sporran is one thing with the traditional kilt: but why the need for one with those faux kilts such as the Utilikilt.
I have no problem at all with the faux kilts-if a chap wants to wear one-god for him, a sensible way of dressing. But they are not traditional kilts, and so all the things that go with the traditional kilt are irrelevant: and if added demean the regular kilt and diminish the appearance of the faux kilt: besides raising certain questions-but I'll not go there.
On the practical and appearance side: rather than having something unnecessary dangling in front, that can get in the way-impede driving and so on: why not a neat leather belt pouch.
Too the modesty when sitting argument does not work-for a sporran hung that low just gets in the way when walking.
Too we must remember that the present position of the sporran is very much a Victorian invention: with side sporrans-up to the belt etc having at least as good a claim.
So today for formal occasions I'll wear the sporran in the 'accepted position', but hung on the stomach rather than the legs. However for day to day wear it is a side sporran, plus a leather pouch on the belt which takes cigarettes and lighter.

For graduation I wore my tan Utilikilt, sporran, braided sporran belt, hose and brogues (pics as soon as I can find them I was quite busy congratulating all my graduating students.) I did this to look as formal as my pants wearing colleagues as well as demark myself as "classy". It was funny because many of the parents who did not know me kept waiting for me to pipe in the students. I am sure they are happier that I did not; but the superintendent of the region wants me to learn how to pipe for next year (ha ha).
This is to say that the sporran looked good, and I had starched the cargos close to the side so they did not bulge, so they were not as available as usual.
I know that Steven V. would be upset that a sporran was worn with a UK, but if form follows function, then I looked good and was functional. Needless to say, I was a talking point, Kilts in the South Bronx are rare indeed; that and it was windy that day, the sporran kept the front a mystery and for that I was glad to have it.

You are absolutely right. That's why Utilikilts have pockets and the Sporran will shield the buttons - an UK trademark. UK is an American design and aside from the Pleats and wrap around design, they share nothing in common.
To wear or not to wear a sporran with his UK is a personal choice. Cutting edge fashion is not about following the rule, but to reinventing them. There is no right or wrong answer in life. If it fancy you in certain way, do it. You are also young enough to bend the rule of dressing formally.

When I first bought my UK, I thought that I'd be wearing a sporran with it, but I got over the laziness factor and actually transferred the contents of my sporran into the pockets. It's a different feeling but I still enjoy it. And I like having the buttons exposed.
