Seems like the question about any "entitlement" to wearing a particular tartan has been adressed...go ahead and wear just about any tartan but be knowledgeable about it.

As to the length issue, it's been brought up several times before. I'm only about 5'10" and seriously doubted that the 24" lenght would be right...I assumed that it would be hanging below my knees but I was wrong. True, the top is sitting very close to the bottom of my ribcage but that actually feels just right now...very comfortable, in fact. The wide expanse is broken up by the belt and sporran and, as I've commented before, it's almost like a snug tummy and back support. I'd try it...wear it a couple of times before you start thinking about hemming it. I was convinced that I'd have to hem mine but I was dead wrong...it falls just at the top of my kneecaps which is fine.

I am 5'8" and the 24" was no problem for me.

You seem awfully worried about getting in trouble for wearing a certain tartan. Relax, very few people will even know what tartan you are wearing. Just know what a tartan represents if you wear it and wear it with honor and pride.
As others have said, I wouldn't worry about it too much. While at the 2005 Stone Mountain Highland Games, a vendor from Glasgow enquired about my Blackwatch kilt. He didn't recognize the tartan, nor did he seem to understand it's significance when I told him what it was.

Just get it and wear it. Worry about your first public outing if you must, but not about the kilt so much.

A vendor from Glasgow did not recognize the BW tartan? Was he from Glasgow, KY maybe? Even so, that is amazing!
The kilt concealed a blaster strapped to his thigh. Lazarus Long
