Thank you all for your suggestions.
I, too; like the Maple Leaf, but don't feel that brown and wine go together (though of course I could wear it without the jacket -- but then I'll start having storage space problems!).
The old Lang Syne is tempting, but I'd prefer not to have heavyweight cloth.
The tartan I have in mind has not been mentioned. It must have been another forum. It was basically tha same as Hamish's with an additional line of red.

Found it !
Highland Granite (from Lochcarron) is another possibility, very like Hamish's Grey Thistle .
But what my subconscious had registered was actually called Balmoral Claret -- obviously just what I need for a wine-coloured jacket.
Is this available to mortals with no royal blood, however? that is the question.

I've not seen Highland Granite in the flesh... but photos of it look good. Certainly more economical than designing your own custom tartan. Another option I suppose.
