Try www.rootsweb.com for starters, this is a huge free genealogical data base, they have many message boards, they are subdivided by surnames. Locate the message board for your surname, you may find some fellow Texans with your surname on the board. Most of the members will freely share information with you. In many cases they can direct you to previous research or resourses for your surname.
Another thing you can try is to do a google search for the surname or even put your ancestor's name in quotation marks, sometimes it is surprising what you will turn up. There are also some famly associations that have websites, you might see if you find a site for your surname.
Be forewarned, genealogy is very addictive, much like kilts.
