It's not my lady I would be worried about, it's the 'ol fella'
I slide to the side also, having the sporran on a leather strap makes this easier. Also, make sure there is nothing heavy in it.

Plus there's a lot less chance of it catching on her gown, which may set the evening off badly!....

When the wife and I go to Blob's Park for some good ol' polka dancing, I push mine off to the left hip. There are few dances more potentially detrimental to the two of you wearing a sporran than the polka and it works just fine off to the side.

There's a running joke about doing the tango kilted around here...my wife and I may go to the tango lessons/dancing session at the Chicago Park Districts Summer Dance Fest...will he wear the kilt or his gaucho pants? (Or will he uncharacteristically just behave himself?)

For the tango you must forgo your kilt. Gaucho pants all the way. Don't forget the red rose clenched between your teeth!

Sliding the sporran on to your left hip when dancing with a partner in your arms is not only "acceptable", it is de rigeur. There is no alternative. Taking the sporran off before a dance would give the impression that you are undressing at the side of the dance floor!!
