Kilt Shops Springing Up All Over

Last week while having a pub lunch in Duns, I noticed a new ad on the wall for a new kilt shop at Berwick-on-Tweed. Then yesterday when I went into town I discovered that a kilt shop has now opened right here in my own home town - Tyne Tartans in O'Connell Street, Hawick, where there was previously a gents outfitters which sold trousers and other male clothing but only hired kilts. Kilt wearing must be on the up with all these new outlets opening. Now that there is a local kilt shop here I will need to order another kilt and give them some business - previously I have had to travel out of town or go on the internet to obtain kilts.

It's good to hear about new shops. Maybe theres a kilt revival starting. It's only a 2 1/2 hr drive to the Scottish Tartans Museum from here, but a local shop would be nice.

John, didn't Rex Tremende just pick up 2 kilts and some accessories from a Celtic clothing store near him? Near Cincinnati I believe.

    Small hijack -
From the North American Kiltmaker Database - a kiltmaker in Sandusky.
I don't know if this was the one Rex mentioned, so maybe there are two in Ohio.

The Celtic Isles Shop is in Waynesville, OH, near Cincinnati and Dayton, and it is indeed the place where I picked up a couple kilts. The owner is a reseller, however, working through O'Neil of Dublin and J. Higgins. I think he keeps a few kilts in stock, like the ones I bought, but he also will take measurements and have one made custom order. I enjoyed leafing through a few of the sample books, actually.

Sandusky is rather on the other end of the state, but much closer to Prester John.

To hop back on the thread, I have to say that I was surprised to learn of a kilt shop here - but the owner of Celtic Isles says he does a pretty brisk business. I believe there is a similar retailer in Kentucky, somewhere between Lexington and Louisville. They seem to be everywhere - and so must the clientele be.

    Regards,
    Rex in Cincinnati

If anyone cares the shop in KY that rex mentioned is http://www.scotyard.com/ they are in Shelbyville (lived there for a while as a kid).
They are a reseller as well, though they were making their own UK knockoff a while back (they were crap cost like $40 and not worth that).

On the other hand, I bought an in stock tweed jacket a while back that I'm very happy with.

Here in Northern London [ North Finchley] a man's outfitter which has long had a kilt in the window: has now changed it's facade to include the fact that it supplies kilts.

Quite simply a local shop will not waste window space, or go to the expense of changing it's facade, unless there is a market-follow the money being the motto of such a firm.

Whilst a chum living in Stirling mentioned a bit bacl on the proliferation of kilt shops-compared to even five years ago.

All suggesting that there is a growing army of kilt owners out there, only needing a slight push to get them wearing their kilt on a day to day basis.

I've had most of my dealings with The Scotland Yard and I have been very happy with their service and they are the venue that I recommend to anyone who asks.
