The casual kilt belt sold at the museum is a great product, made of heavy leather. It is the belt I wear most often with the kilt, unless I'm dressing up. I have one in both black and brown.

I purchased one of the clansman's belt from the Scottish Tartan Museum last month. They needed 3 to 4 weeks to get it in from their supplier. It is well worth the price and the wait. I bought the dark brown one. It matched my current sporran better. I'll tell more about it and post some pics when I get my latest creation finished.

Dangerous Threads on eBay also has some 2" wide brown belts with a plain brass buckle. I bought one and it was too small. I will post some pics tonight and see if anyone is interested. The guy on eBay has other sizes and I will be getting a correct sized one shortly.

Mike Butler at AmeriKilts has a guy who makes up his belts for him as needed. I'm sure he's flexible. Just ask about the brass buckle. Asking is how I got my first AK brown belt before they were offered regularly.

Well, took the plunge and bought the 2" belt blank at Tandy. It took about three hours to finish, but I cut lines and chamfered and polished the edges. The dye is mahogany. Forgive my lousy camera, but here are the results:

I'm pretty pleased with the way it came out. Thanks for the guidance, all!

    Belts through the ages

There's lots of good advice in this thread. Belts are really easy to make. By the way, I'm sure there are any number of different belts that have been used to tie kilts on through the ages.

The link above to the Tartan Museum shop has some Buzz Kidder belts. They are about the thickest bull leather you could ever find with a heavy single holer buckle. I'm looking at getting one. O'Neille

That's why I like mine. It's just so "substantial."

I went to the Leather Factory in Tucson last Saturday. I bought some stuff for making a 2.5 brown belt (it is wide) but I wanted something you couldn't go out and buy. I just used a silver saddle cinch buckle as I am trying to keep all of my hardare silver. I dyed the belt and matching thickness sporran strap a medium brown that came a true brown not reddish brown. With use it should acquire that nice worn saddle finish. The guy was very helpful with everything I needed. He told me that Buzz Kidder got some of his stuff there and luckily Saturday was wholesale price day. I bought a cool regular sized celtic knot buckle and some celtic conchos to make a belt for my casuals and gasp! jeans (motorcycle). I spent too much on everytning but it was still less than the belt and sporran strap would have cost with shipping. And I have some tools for future endeavors. I'm off to sew a buckle on a cordovan sporran strap. O'Neille
