As of today, me. See genral kilt talk, vintage find. With AZ heat I've never pondered having a full 8yd wool monster. This was too good to pass up. O'Neille

Just got delivery of a Robertson Red 8-yrd that I found on eBay for less than my PV CCK. And they were nice enough to throw in a belt, buckle, sporran & chain, and dancing ghillies with it!

In 55 years of wearing kilts, every one I have owned has been tailored for me in at least 16oz wool worsted material. I have had MacKenzie, Anderson Modern, Anderson Ancient, Anderson (MacNaughtons of Pitlochry), Anderson of Kinneddar x 2 (LochCarron Weavers) and MacLachlan Modern. It is well worth the expense to make certain that a kilt is fit and suitable for all you would want from it - and although the cost is perhaps a little extra, you will have a robust garment that will last at least twice as long as even a 13oz material. For a kilt to fit properly and feel right, it has to be tailored. We wouldn't be posting in this forum if we didn't appreciate the better aspects of kilt wearing and in that respect, casual kilts (as they call them) just don't cut it!! - PipingScot.

I am 100% in agreement with PipingScot. There is nothing, nothing like a well tailored, proper fitting kilt. Such a kilt just feels right. It's one of the greatest pleasures in life.

Well, there are about forty responses already, but since I'm a newbie here, I'll respond, too.

I own a full 8 yd, 13 oz wool kilt from House of Edgar in Modern Robertson Htg. It's as fine a kilt as I have yet seen, and it's about 8 years old.

I also have a 13 oz. "casual kilt" (about 4-5 yds) in the muted Robertson Hunting from William MacIntosh. I ordered it for more casual, lively activities like picnics, hiking, etc., and it's my favorite, maybe becasue it's a bit shorter.

I also have a 22 oz military weight repro from What Price Glory in Gordon tartan. It's a great kilt for cold weather, but it's a bit spase--like military kilts--and has no fringe. It is, however, well made, just not as fine (if I may use the word) as a handmade custom kilt.

I also have a recent P-V in Leatherneck tartan (ooh-rah, Semper Fi) that seems pretty OK for a casual kilt. I am looking forward to their wool models soon.

Add to this my 5 yd breachen feile from William MacIntosh, and you have the set. The great kilt looks like dynamite when dressed up with doublet and lace, but it's a bit of trouble to put on. However, from the responses I get, it's worth it.

That's my experience covering about 8 years of heavy duty kilting.

My opinion is that there is absolutely NO substitute for a hand-made, custom kilt. It is worth the extra money IF YOU HAVE IT, but you are still looking better than the louts in jeans in any kilt. But then I am a trditionalist, so consider that. Also, with all this time and money spent on Scottish stuff, you can see that I am quite enthusiastic.
